Over the course of his career as a psychiatrist, Dr. Allen Collins has cultivated an extensive background of academic and clinical experience. He currently serves as Emeritus Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. For his undergraduate education, Dr. Allen Collins earned a degree in pre-medical studies (A.B.) from New York's Columbia College. Dr. Allen Collins next worked toward his M.D.(1968) at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston before returning to Columbia for his Masters Degree in Public Health, which added important societal insights to his work as a psychiatrist. While completing his MPH, Dr. Allen Collins fulfilled his residency training at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center/New York State Psychiatric Institute in New York. Dr. Allen Collins complemented this experience with subspecialty training in family/couples therapy at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center's Department of Psychiatry. In 1980, Dr. Allen Collins finished Psychoanalytic Training at the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis & Psychology, earning his Certificate in Psychoanalysis. Immediately following this milestone, Dr. Allen Collins was selected as Assistant Examiner in Psychiatry for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and was promoted to Senior Examiner a decade later for the Board.. In 1986, Dr. Allen Collins was selected as Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Lenox Hill Hospital, a New York facility where he had estalished many clinical service and education programs in psychiatry over the previous 13 years. In 1992, Dr. Allen Collins began 12 years of service as Chief Proctor for the Part I (Written) Examination) for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. In addition to his work as a administrative and clinical psychiatrist, Dr. Allen Collins has held several teaching appointments. From September 1979 until June 1990, Dr. Allen Collins had various levels of teaching appointments culminating in his service as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York, following which he was appointed an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College. From 1993 until 2009, Dr. Allen Collins taught at New York University Langone Medical Center as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry. He currently holds the title of Emeritus Chairman at Lenox Hill Hospital and operates full-time as a psychiatrist in private practice.
