My Journey towards becoming an Online Media Specialist began when I obtained my Journalism Qualification in 2012 at the Durban University of Technology. I have always had an interest and passion in writing and learning more about media, being a Journalist intrigued me and I found the course very interesting. However on the journey of knowing myself I was faced with an opportunity to either major in television or online media in my 3rd and final year. I then chose online media which would expose me to a whole new different and exciting world of media than the traditional media I was known to.

In my 3rd year of majoring in online media, I got to know about blogging, writing for online media and got the concept of what online media is about. I got to open various social media accounts and found out how social media plays a role in modern days news and messages.

I got to work with various online platforms, blogger homes and sites that generated news instantly. I was intrigued by the immediacy and possibilities this tool offered. It was no longer about waiting for the 7 o clock news to know what's going on, or buying tomorrow’s newspapers but grasping fresh news as and when it happens through this platforms that update you instantly. It was interesting fun and it caught my attention.

My journalistic background and experience in this course prepared me for an even greater passion within online media. To date I have +2years experience in working in the online media field but I hope to get an opportunity to sharpen and broaden my skills in this area. I did my internship at Sevafrica 1st Corporate group for about 11 months. We wrote current news daily and generated content for their weekly newsletters.

At first I was involved in each of them until I was given my own weekly newsletter to handle called ‘Celebrations of Life’ which came out on a Friday and was a more relaxed newsletter providing fashion, relationship and beauty tips as well as celebrity news.

I also went on to be tasked with generating content for a client on their website called 'My Man Is'. Here I got to work with the client through our CEO, and would just get the feel and concept of the client than share my ideas with the client and go ahead with it if they were happy. The content they required had exciting features which kept the readers and followers anticipating more each week. This allowed me to always have my thinking and creative cap on and to really unleash inner potential I didn't even know existed. We also go to write for their main website Sevafrica.com and manage the social media pages within.

I also got to manage a project called the KZN Unemployment Graduates by the Economic development department through a company called Creative Lead. Here I got to manage online media sites and provide it with helpful content for graduates. We also embarked on marketing campaigns such as marketing on radio and having events to promote what the project does to people. My position there was an Online Content Creator.

I recently became an Entertainment News editor at All4women, 6 months temp position for a lady on maternity leave )ends Feb 05, 2016). The position entailed:

Editing stories on WordPress and adding to website. Collecting news from various news sources (purchased content), loading on to the entertainment news section. Compiling newsletters, 3 per day- Entertainment morning, Entertainment extra and Entertainment late edition. Loading the html codes on Constant contact to complete the newsletter, scheduling for the allocated time. Sending to over 70 000 entertainment news subscribers.
