Environment & Configuration Manager

Role: - Environment Manager and Technical Resolution Manager for the Calypso v12 and v13 implementation in an Agile based project.

Technologies: - Redhat, Oracle, MQ, Ant, Hudson, SVN, Java, Shell-scripting, Calypso, Quality Centre.

Responsibilties: -

  • Responsible for all DEV and TEST environments (Red Hat and Oracle).

  • Management of technical issues within all environments.

  • Hands-on administration of Calypso, RedHat, MQ (message pop/insert), jar, jarsigner, jnlp creation.

  • Build, deploy and modify scripts and builds using Eclipse, SVN, Ant and Hudson.

  • Automate as much of the deployment, configuration and monitoring as possible (using Ant and Hudson/Jenkins)Co-ordinate the technical resources (both Calypso and non-Calypso).

  • First point of contact for (technical) Production issues after Go-Live.

  • Provide a technical/environmental gap analysis between Phase I and Phase II environments.

  • Co-ordinate the unix/dba teams to create the new environments + knowledge transfer.

  • Provided technical application and administrative training.

  • Maintain the Environment Calendar and schedule environment usage according to the project plan

  • Manage the specifications and configuration of the current environments. (CMDB)

  • Maintain the Environment connectivity (data flow) diagram.

  • Maintain the Technical Issues log and progress and be responsible for resolving all items.

  • Document any custom scripts and non-standard changes to the environment.

Summary: - During Phase II of the project, I took on the role of Configuration Manager. This role required that I manage all validated and approved configuration items using the Calypso Configuration Management Tool. With the assistance of the BAs, I had to determine which items could be successfully transferred using the CM Tool and which needed manual intervention.

Role: - Hudson/Jenkins Administrator, Technical Configuration Manager, Dev/Test Environment Manager for a Calypso v12 installation.

Technologies: - Redhat, Oracle, MQ, Ant, Hudson, SVN, Java, Shell-scripting, Calypso, Jira.

Responsibilities: -

  • Further develop and refine their Phase I environment setup.

  • Hands-on administration of Calypso and RedHat.

  • Build, deploy and modify scripts using Eclipse, SVN, Ant and Hudson.

  • Automate as much of the deployment, configuration and monitoring as possible (using Ant and Hudson/Jenkins)

  • Provide a technical/environmental gap analysis between Phase I and Phase II environments.

  • Provide instruction to the unix/dba teams to create the new environments + knowledge transfer.

  • Provide a technical/environmental gap analysis between their Phase I deliverables (Commodities) and their Phase II targets which consisted of 9 streams.

Notes: - As Build Manager, I was only responsible for compiling the build and resolve any errors during the merge process prior to deploying it to an Environment. As I was not responsible for making code changes, I would ask the developers to modify their code to resolve the conflict.

At the end of my contract, I prepared the new environments ready for Phase II and knowledge transfer covering Technical Configuration Management, Environment Management and Build/Deployment Management using Jenkins/Hudson and Ant.

Role: - Calypso, 4Sight 2nd-line Support for Development, Test, QA and Production environments.

Summary: - Continuing on from my role as Environment Manager, I was asked to provide Environment Management for the 4Sight project. However, I choose to remain on the Application Support team to further develop my skills with Calypso in a Production situation and gather experience with JBOSS, 4Sight, and other banking products. I was the formal support representative for the Calypso and 4Sight applications which means I am a point-of-escalation and dedicated interface to the Calypso and 4Sight projects.

I was involved in technical discussions, strategies and resolving sensitive situations. This saved many man-hours by preventing escalations and kept other departments aware of standard processes and procedures within the AS team. My documentation skills were repeatedly commended.

  • Hands-on administration of Calypso, RedHat, jar, jarsigner, jnlp creation.

  • Maintained test and environment scripts using Eclipse and SVN.

  • Streamlined Environment deployment and reduced implementation by 50%.

  • Improved support services by implementing training and knowledge transfer. Response to resolution reduced radically.

  • Brought on board before any Calypso infrastructure or code had been developed.

  • Advise hardware/software specifications for Calypso, High Availability and Disaster Recovery.

  • Configure each environment in a controlled and recorded manner.

  • Central point of contact for all technical issues in Dev and Test environments. (Progressed through Quality Centre.)

Summary: - I was hired to support Calypso and Calypso ERS (Risk Management) in Production and QA, but within weeks I quickly demonstrated my skills as an Environment Manger and became an invaluable resource to the Calypso Project as an Environment Manager for the Development and Test systems.

The trading platform included Derivatives, Oil, Precious Metals, Commodities, Risk with MQ connectivity to the Intellimatch, Varworks, Datawarehouse and Risk departments for reconciliation and risk analysis.

Role: - Application Support and Primary liaison-interface between numerous Project Managers (for Calypso, ACBS and Devon) and the IT department.

Technologies: - Windows 2003, Solaris, Redhat, Oracle, Sybase, MQ, Java, Shell-scripting, Calypso.

Responsibilities:

  • Saved 20 man-hours per week by implementing a project-specific Change/Incident/Problem management solution.

  • Hands-on administration of Calypso, Solaris, MQ (message pop/insert), jar, jarsigner, jnlp creation.

  • Keep track of and deal with Changes and Incidents regarding the bespoke and commercial middleware applications in the Test and Development .

  • Administrate approximately 40 software environments across a dozen servers.

Summary: - From scratch, I designed, created, and implemented a Change, Incident and Configuration Management process based on ITIL (v2), which I then managed. This was initially developed for the Calypso (FX/MM and Derivatives) Programme and resulted in saving 20 man-hours per week.

Following its success, I was asked to (and successfully) implement Environment Management into the ACBS (loans) Programme and Devon (FX/MM and Derivatives) Programme.

Towards the end of my contract, the project migrated to Agile where I received some training.
