I proactively implemented systems to enable reporters to work efficiently with sources after hours. Due to the nature of working at night, I directed a team in covering everything from local emergencies to major international disasters.

Writing for six newspapers, I coordinated the needs of each newspaper with varied production deadlines, and communicated news stories to a national audience, within the tough news-breaking environment of the federal press gallery. Key rounds included immigration, social policy and national security.

Web Editor

Department of Defence (Defence Science and Technology Organisation)

Managing three websites which catered to several hundred thousand unique visitors per month, I crafted the presentation of key scientific research for the Department of Defence.

These sites included: the public-facing website, a Daily News service providing an internal communications channel for nearly 3000 staff; and a collaborative workspace for the Science Industry and External Relations branch.

Key tasks included:

  • Sourcing, illustrating and publishing stories of interest to external audiences including industry, university, the wider Defence community and the general public via the external website;
  • Acting as editor-in-chief of the internal Daily News service, which published 1100 stories in the first year of its life, and managing a team of 15 section editors;
  • Developing strategies for effective use of new technologies for the organisation;
  • Working closely with the IT team to deliver on projects;
  • Managing both long-term technical projects, and initiating improvements to existing products.

Key achievements included:

  • Managing the production, testing, implementation and documentation stages of the internal Daily News project, which included bringing together contract designers, developers and an internal technical team to roll-out the service across six sites across Australia;
  • Managing the communications roll-out of DSTO TV, an internal TV news service in a You Tube-style format which allowed staff to publish videos of their work online;
  • Creating three event websites for the MAGIC international robot challenge, a high-priority event which supported collaboration between teams across the world;
  • Conducting face-to-face training of almost 100 staff in the use of the WordPress content management system;
  • Initiating a digital asset management system to capture metadata for DSTO assets;
  • Being appointed a member of the Junior Leadership Team, a contributor to the Knowledge Management Working Group, and a delegate to a Defence-wide scheme to introduce a common CMS platform;
  • Appointed an auxiliary member of the computing Helpdesk team.
