Freelance marketing management and graphic design.

Recent projects have included 2 websites for small businesses and redesigning my own website. In the past I have done a silent/live auction book, newspaper ads, and brochures for a private school, a program and postcard for a theater group, business cards, place cards and signs for several private parties. Project managed several website designs.

Consumer Marketing (contract)

Sunset Magazine

Rehired part time by previous employer to champion a professional subscription program not absorbed by a reorganization in Time Inc.’s Consumer Marketing Department. E-mail marketing projects have been my main focus in this position. Functions include writing copy, editing, designing and producing all e-mails as well as managing their deployment through Zeta Interactive. In addition, I have designed, produced and launched several online ad campaigns and a Google Adwords campaign for this program.

Consumer Marketing Manager

Sunset Magazine, Time Inc.

New subscriber acquisition for a consumer lifestyle publication, online and print. Continuity marketing for Sunset Wine Club. Content management for several areas of the website. Creative direction and design of online and print promotions. Management of Adwords program and e-mail surveys.

Notable Accomplishments:

  • Increased response to a direct mail program by 40% despite a 26% reduction in mail quantity.
  • Increased website orders 26% by simply refreshing creative.
  • Increased net online revenue by 51%.
  • Refreshed every piece of online creative twice within a year.
  • Applied traditional merge purge criteria for deduping to a database model and decreased the number of duplicate mailings to the active file by an additional 6%. This decreased complaints by a significant margin, and my approach was duplicated by other publications within our division.
  • Streamlined a loyalty program that was customer service intensive into a program that is clearer and able to be accomplished using online forms.
  • Focused on moving as many processes and programs online as possible.

Managed special projects for private school including website production management, marketing strategy and execution, graphic design/production, compiling accreditation documents, grant applications, writing of handbook. Served as admission coordinator, email administrator and on-site technology liaison. Database development, cleanup, report creation, documentation and training for development and student databases.

 Notable Accomplishments:

  • Moved all student records into a database and created reports so that one-off time consuming spreadsheets could be avoided.
  • Created a much more efficient, professional and cost effective situation for e-mail and website by moving to an outside hosting situation.
  • Wrote and designed admission packets, advertisements and other promotions for the school.
  • Served as marketing and technology representative to school strategic planning committees.
  • Edited and produced a 100 page handbook for the school.
  • Was a driving force and participatory member of three Middle School Launch Teams assisted in writing proposals, grant requests, promotional materials
  • Interviewed staff, compiled statistics and wrote and edited a 200 page document for school’s double accreditation

Responsible for acquisition and retention of subscribers, website traffic, event attendees and product buyers. Executive level financial reporting responsibility for entire department and P/L responsibility  for list rental revenue and expense. Responsible for privacy policy compliance, USPS and DMA rule compliance.  Supervised and trained 3 other managers in circulation, audience development and retention activities.Notable Accomplishments: 

  • Managed budget for three departments totaling $10M in expense, 4M in revenue.
  • Project manager for event marketing, registration and audience qualification websites. Wrote and edited content pages for event marketing website. Worked with web hosting company to plan, design and test front end, set up attendee database, report development and administration site for registration.Successfully registered 400+ attendees for two conferences using the system.
  • Launched and developed InfoWorld's e-mail newsletter program that grew to 30 newsletters with over 400,000 unique subscribers.
  • Developed and executed with Corporate List Manager the strategy for increasing list rental revenue each year. Launched InfoWorld'se-mail list rental program.Handled creative development for list rental promotions. Managed internal list rentals. During my tenure the list revenue increased from $400K to $4M.
