A mixed methods, interdisciplinary study using techniques from clinical psychology in an anthropological framework. The study is longitudinal, and follows a group of Poi Performers for one year, assessing interpersonal belongingness, quality of life, and flow state in rehearsals and performances in this community of practice.
To address challenges faced by first generation college students at Indiana University South Bend, research was carried out using participant observation, field study, and a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted as part of a qualitative methods class in the Fall 2012 semester. One major challenge, crossing from the working class to the middle class, and the obstacles this presents to first generation students, has been a widely addressed issue in educational research, as compared to traditional students and faculty from middle class backgrounds. This crossing of classes highlights a distinct difference in needs of first generation students in terms of navigating university culture, and accessing resources to meet, or reduce those needs.
An interdisciplinary measure of sociocultural tolerance, intolerance, and the proposed variable of moral fluidity. The measure can be curtailed to field or lab work for anthropology, sociology, experimental, or social psychology, and other disciplines like poli-sci, gender studies, etc...
