University Foundation Programme at David Game College

Working with UK and international students in order to prepare them for applying to universities within the UK.  Responsibilities include: supporting students with personal or academic issues they face; monitoring student attendance, identifying and addressing issues at an early stage; collaborating with teaching staff to fully support students; maintaining comprehensive student records; communicating effectively with parents and supporting administrative staff with examination preparation.

When studying abroad, I worked with 3 other Erasmus students from countries across Europe to team teach in a local Austrian school.  We would meet each week and discuss ideas for what we would be teaching in the next lesson and decide which roles each person would take.  This was a real learning curve as there was an added element of challenge in the language differences, however, it was a great experience to learn from the knowledge and expertise of others.  When teaching I often collaborated with stage partners to plan coherent programmes of work and engage in regular professional dialogue.  In my current role I work closely with colleagues across the college to ensure relevant information is shared and to provide support on a range of tasks such as: supporting the Admissions department with handling enquiries and processing new students and supporting the Exams Co-ordinator by double marking examinations and publishing grades on the intranet system.

Planning

In teaching, I was responsible for the short, medium and long term planning for the class.  I organised this through creating different planning templates that allowed me to gain an overview into what was being taught and when.  This was then transferred into a larger forward plan.  Additionally, as I took responsibility for achieving the Fairtrade Award for the school, I planned whole school events to raise awareness.  This involved me speaking to a range of people to agree on dates and times to conduct these events and arranging support in delivering them.  This is a transferrable skill that enables me to be highly organised and manage high workloads effectively.

Time Management

I have frequently been faced with a growing list of tasks and impending deadlines.  I am a firm believer in prioritising tasks by importance and completing them accordingly.  I ensure as soon as I receive a deadline, this is noted in a paper and electronic diary and this allows me to see dates as they approach, allowing me to ensure work is completed on time.  As a constant list maker, I enjoy the satisfaction of seeing tasks completed.

Communication

My work experiences have allowed me to develop my communication skills in a range of ways.  When teaching I worked closely with a classroom assistant to communicate relevant information about pupils in need of support, and discussed ways in which their needs could be best addressed.  I had the opportunity to contact business owners in the local community to ask them to work with the class to deliver lessons to support pupils in developing skills for life and work.  This involved continuous dialogue and reflecting on what went well and what could be improved.  I maintained constant contact with parents both in the playground, informally, and at formal parent-teacher meetings.  Having an open line of contact with parents led to positive relationships being formed.  In my current role I regularly communicate with students and parents.  When speaking, I am always clear, articulate and polite and I pride myself on having a high standard of written English which I demonstrate through written communication with staff members, students and parents.

Interests

  • Reading - I am an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction and thoroughly enjoy spending my free time immersing myself in a book.  I consider myself to be a lifelong learner and reading allows me to constantly develop myself.  I also try to remain up to date with current events by reading newspapers online.
  • Travelling- I enjoy visiting cities in Europe and have recently returned from my first trip to New York.  When completing my semester abroad in Austria, I used this opportunity to travel to as many surrounding areas as possible.  This allowed me to experience different cultures and meet new people.  Moreover, my enjoyment of travel has also supported me in developing my knowledge of languages and I would consider myself to have a beginner knowledge of French, Spanish and German.  It is a personal goal of mine to become fluent in a language other than English.
  • Learning - I have recently completed several online courses in the field of Psychology, as this is an area in which I have a strong interest.  I have also begun learning simple HTML and CSS through an online course, it is a personal goal of mine to gain a greater understanding of different coding languages.
