My name is Melissa van der Merwe and I am currently in the process of completing my BA Communication and Language Practice degree at the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal Triangle). I joined the Campus in 2009 and hope to one day be a journalist of note. I am currently the Chief Editor of the Campus e-newspaper, Student 24/7, and I find it hard to contain my excitement when it comes to my future involvement in the media industry. The strides that I have made in the past three years bears witness not only to my academic inclination but also my technical skills and abilities. I am determined and focused, especially in achieving my professional goals.
Within the scope of journalism a great emphasis is placed on written and verbal communication and I continuously strive to become a more rounded media practitioner.
I believe that my academic background together with my enthusiasm and my interest in journalism makes me an employable graduate. Staying true to the ethos of my alma mater, I am rooted in the values of integrity; respect; accountability and commitment whilst celebrating my roots within a multi-cultural and multilingual society. I would greatly appreciate an opportunity to not only witness the internal workings of the newspaper industry but also to join your editorial team – be it for a holiday position or an internship.
