Bachelor of Science in Human Environmental Science

The University of Alabama

I am currently a student attending one of the greatest institutions in the state working to attain a degree in Food and Nutrition.  I aspire to enroll in the University's coordinated dietetics program and become a registered dietitian.

May 2010 - Aug 2010

Boston University

Over the summer of 2010, I embraced the opportunity to travel elsewhere and take summer courses at Boston University.  These courses are core for my major at the University of Alabama in pursuing a Food and Nutrition degree.  The introductory chemistry and introductory organic chemistry courses were both difficult classes and I finished the summer with a 4.0 GPA through Boston University.

May 2009 - Jul 2009

The University of North Carolina--Asheville

At the University of North Carolina- Asheville I fulfilled a requirement of my home institution by taking an American history course over the summer of 2009.  This course provided a more age-appropriate look at the history of the United States and provided a new perspective to the history lessons I had always learned growing up in the state of Alabama.  The diligent writing of two papers every week provided me with a stronger writing ability and critical thinking and analytical skills.

Aug 2004 - May 2008

Advanced Academic High School Diploma

Vestavia Hills High School

Obtained a high school diploma with a cumulative 4.01 GPA upon graduation.

Initial Goals

As a student my current goals pending graduation are to maintain a high GPA, enroll in the University of Alabama's coordinated dietetic program and earn a degree in Food and Nutrition.  In earning this degree, I hope to attain a license as a registered dietitian.  Involvement in the local community as well as on-campus organizations is something I also aim at keeping a priority.  International awareness and exposure is an aspect of college I hope to experience through study abroad.

Work Philosophy

As a rising healthcare professional in the field of dietetics, my personal work philosophy is to inform others of nutritional decisions and impacts on their body of food choices they make.  In the current state of America, obesity is a major problem as well as cardiovascular disease and hypertension among other things.  With the increase in all of these health-related issues there is a greater need for people to be informed of the possible dietetic changes that can be made as preventative or recuperative measures.

Community Service

When home in North Carolina, I volunteer at Manna Food Bank and Emma Community Garden in Asheville.  Locally through student organizations such as UA's Project Health, I have volunteered with the set up of the Student Health Fair, the Save-A-Life tour, and raised money for the first annual Suicide Prevention Walk.  During my time as the treasurer of the Riverside Hall Council, I helped coordinate the Riverside dorm's participation in Relay for Life at the University of Alabama as well as helped raise money for the 2009 Christmas season's Operation Christmas Child.

Long-term Goals

In the years following graduation, I hope to become a practicing dietitian.  Ideally, I will move out of the state of Alabama to experience more of the rest of the United States and expand my horizons.  The impacts of nutrition on individuals throughout the world provide many opportunities to learn and understand the different practices and possible health solutions.

General Business

I am currently pursuing a double minor in General Business along with a minor in computer science.  The study of economics, legal studies, accounting, individual taxation, operations management, and statistics have provided me with a broad knowledge base of current business practices.

Computer Science

I am currently pursuing a minor in Computer Science at the University of Alabama.  This minor requires that several varied courses be completed to demonstrate a proficient knowledge of computer systems and programming.  With the current reliance on technology, the comprehension of software being used and how to use it will be a worthwhile investment in my future.

Cashier

Newk's Express Cafe

I currently work as a cashier at Newk's Express Cafe in Tuscaloosa.  This part time job has definitely improved my time management skills, interpersonal skills and provided me with more knowledge about the food service industry.  This unique eatery's extensive menu provides a healthier alternative around town rather than any other drive-thru fast food restaurant.

Jun 2007 - Aug 2008

Hostess

Jim N' Nick's Barbeque Restaurant

As a hostess at this family restaurant,  I worked personally with customers to ensure a pleasant dining experience as well as handled customer complaints and concerns.  This job also required coordinating the layout of seating customers in a dining room with a 100-person capacity.  To maintain a positive job atmosphere, communication amongst employees was essential and facilitated a smooth operation in day-to-day service.

Aug 2005 - May 2006

Ice Cream Maker/Scooper

Bruster's Real Ice Cream

My first place of employment provided many learning opportunities in the field of customer service.  During my time working there, I was named employee of the month and was promoted shortly thereafter to preparing the ice cream product to be sold.  Ensuring quality and customer satisfaction was a high priority and is a part of the work integrity I still aim to uphold today.
