Monir Elzalaki began his carrer in agriculture in 1978 at a mushroom spawn (seed) production laboratory in Soquel, California. Eventually serving as the company's Facility Manager, he supervised 25 employees. Mr. Elzalaki then shifted his attention to the production of the mushrooms themselves, working at a related operation owned by Castle and Cooke (Dole) Foods. In 1986, he relocated to Salem, Oregon, where he assumed the position of Production Manager at Mushroom King, a privately held mushroom farm, producing about 450,000 lbs. of mushrooms per week. In 1988, Monir Elzalaki helped to form Oak Grove Mushrooms, a company that contracted with Citibank to manage mushroom farms in Oregon and California. In 1989, Mr. Elzalaki accepted the position of Facility Manager for Pictsweet Mushrooms, in Salem, Oregon. In this capacity, he oversaw the management of approximately 400 employees and held responsibility for production scheduling, quality control, logistics, and other administrative duties. In 1990, Mr. Elzalaki joined Sylvan America, Inc. as Director of Sales. Subsequently, he was promoted to President and now serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Sylvan, Inc. The company has expanded globally and currently does business in 65 countries.
