Working for an Insurance broker, on development of a Commercial Insurance aggregator. Lead business analyst with various Project Management responsibilities within the Projects team.

Key Projects worked on include:

  • System Rating Strategy
    • Feasibility Studies and Cost Benefit Analyses on potential rating engine improvement/replacement strategy for the short to middle term. Facilitating workshop and holding discussions with external suppliers and internal key stake holders to elicit key information. Findings were presented to the executive strategy board.
    • The key recommendation, active quote (see next point) was adopted as the strategy to be adopted. Other recommendations are currently sitting in the development pipeline for implementation when resource is available.
  • Active Quote (System add-on enabling post quote rate manipulation)
    • Defining requirements for initial offering, running workshops with key stake holders with in the business.
    • Working with software developers to devise a suitable functional specification acceptable to the business.
    • Defining and rolling out a business process procedure with effective checks and balances to satisfy compliance standards. Including managing initial process issues and adjusting the procedure to suit real world scenarios.
  • System Architecture
    • Researching and creating functional specifications and current state analysis on all existing system components. Responsibilities for individual components shared amongst a team.
    • Co-ordination of the other BA's, project planning and progress/issue reporting to the Management team.
  • IMarket Property Owners Schema definition
    • Defining the message definition of multiple messages that are used to transact property owners business using IMarket messaging standards.
    • Meetings and Workshops held with IMarket Suppliers, Internal Stakeholders and IT suppliers.
    • Full Data message specifications and requirements document for system requirements needed to enable IMarket bespoke messaging.

Business Analyst

SWORD Insurance (Now AgencyPort)

Working for a Software House, on a new system implementation for a Large Italian Insurer. Implementation includes full Underwriting, Claims and Reinsurance functionality to handle Lloyds Market and Companies market insurance. The system went live in December 2011.

My Responsibilities on the project have included:

  • RDS (Requirements Definition Study)
    • Jointly running workshops with analysts from the clients IT department and end users.
    • Producing a detailed Requirements plan for proposed project build.
  • Requirements Gathering and Business Requirements Documents
    • Working closely with End Users and Client Analysts to collect detailed system requirements.
    • Re-engineering existing processes for efficiency of use and low cost build.
    • Producing detailed requirements documents with specific ownership of Underwriting Requirements and Contact Management.
  • Functional Specifications
    • Producing Functional Spec's including technical solutions, data dictionaries and detailed coding notes.
  • Application Configuration - Due to the flexibility of the company's product, most of the configuration is carried out by BA's.
    • Full Implementation of Requirements previously defined. This helped develop a strong understanding of the company's application layer software toolkit and the IT business processes.
  • Database Management
    • Responsible for the SQL required for Requirements pertaining to Underwriting and Contact management.
    • Developed good SQL knowledge through. This includes creating and amending tables, views, triggers and store procedures to create functionality defined in Functional Specs.
  • Release Execution
    • Releasing new versions of the application to multiple database's for the Client and Testing purposes. This included dual database and Metadata releases.
    • Producing Release Documentation including Release Notes, Schema Changes and Resolved Issues documents.
  • Issue Resolution
    • Resolving Issues by priority to ensure sucessful releases and manage the customers expectations.

Business Analyst

Liverpool Victoria Insurance (LV=)

Working on personally owned projects and working as a part of a group of BA's in larger projects as Business Analyst to produce specifications and documentation for IT development.

The main activities performed include:

  • Analysis and design for new insurance system.
  • Analysis and design for changes to legacy insurance system.
  • Development of applications using Rapid Application Development (RAD) methodology.

Major projects worked on include:

  • Motor Claims System Requirements for New Oracle Application system - Premia
    • Use of UML techniques (e.g. Use Cases) to create a mapping of the Motor Claims end-to-end processes. Detailed Business Requirements created based on the Use Cases. Use case and requirements were gathered via workshops with the Business which I hosted both independently and with support from other BA's.
  • Premia Workflow Requirements & Event-Driven Process Chain Diagram Mapping
    • Requirements produced for workflow system to support the Premia Motor claims system described above. Workflow triggers and actions mapped for entire claims process using Event-Driven Process Chain Diagram Mapping.
  • Commercial Claims (SME) System Requirements
    • Analysis and documentation of Requirements and Technical Specification in a RAD methodology for this Oracle application development. RAD methodology on this project included working closely with business users/experts and the system developers to define and develop the application. Larger Monthly JAD workshops were held to present development progress to wider commercial team and project sponsors. System went live Oct 08.
  • Travel New Business System Requirements
    • Produced Requirements and Technical Spec using a RAD methodology for this Oracle application development. System went live on Feb 08. Similar process used as for Commercial Claims system noted above. This project included creating and defining all Customer correspondence documentation to be implemented onto Thunderhead (document generation application).
  • Britannia Rescue System Upgrades
    • Multiple initiatives and upgrades to legacy system e.g. 3rd party data split, MI upgrade, screen field enhancement. Requirements gathering through workshops with end users and discussions with business experts.
  • Broker Renewals EDI Feed Analysis and Definition
    • Analysis and research into the technical make up of all inbound and outbound EDI messages required for automated Broker Renewal. This covered all message manipulations and transformations.
  • Building and Maintaining Team Intranet Site
    • Site built on bespoke Xopus web page creator. This is a relatively unintuitive development tool of which I had no prior experience and limited allocation of time to develop the site. This site went live in May 08.

This role was taken to complete my university placement. Two key jobs fulfilled included:

  • Business Analysis - Project Analysis
  • User application development

Business Analysis - Project Analysis assisted by a Senior Business Analyst (BA) to produce analysis for major organisational projects.

The activities included:

  • Feasibility studies on the cost benefit validity of projects.
  • Workshops with end users to understand current Sales and Underwriting processes and determine key business requirements for process re-design.
  • In depth analysis of current processes within scope of a project, including High/Low level, data and process mapping
  • Re-engineering any business processes where efficiencies and streamlining could be achieved.
  • Produce detailed recommendations supported by statistical analysis for presentation to the Churchill Retail Executives Board of delegated project sponsors.
  • Meet with Business Unit operational heads and senior Business Services members for steer on project direction.

User Application Development - Production of applications to aid and automate day to day processes that were currently owned by Business Services members.

  • An example of this would be to produce a Project Reporting System where Project Managers would produce a monthly report on each project they are working on. This information would be stored; statistics and summaries would also be produced. The main objective of this report was to increase visibility of current projects by presenting this report to the Churchill Executives.
