Residing in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mikal Smoker serves as a Physician Assistant for the Department of Internal Medicine Division of Hematology/Oncology at The University of New Mexico. Joining the university in 2007, she has since participated as a lecturer for physician assistant students. In 2009 and 2010, Mikal Ann Smoker presented talks about serological tumor markers and basics in solid organ tumors to nurses and mid-level practitioners. Prior to her position at University of New Mexico, Mikal Ann Smoker served as a Senior Physician Assistant at the New Mexico Cancer Center. As a generalist in medical oncology and hematology, she oversaw the center’s health education programs. From 2004 to 2007, Mikal Smoker educated cancer patients in how to promote a healthy lifestyle following the completion of their treatment. In addition to presenting the talk at the center on a semiannual basis, she also gave the presentation for the UNM Cancer Center’s Social Work Team in 2008.Throughout her career, Mikal Ann Smoker has visited various medical and health care institutions in New Mexico to participate in speaking engagements. Since 2006, she has attended the New Mexico Academy of Physician Assistants Fall Primary Care Conference to lecture on topics in hematology and oncology. In 2003, Ms. Smoker traveled to Salt Lake City and presented An Elementary Approach to Anemia to mid-level providers with the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. In the following year, she returned to contribute to the Utah Nurse Practitioner Conference and the Utah Physician Assistant Program.Mikal Ann Smoker belongs to the American Academy of Physician Assistants, American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the Academy of Physician Assistants in Oncology. She has earned recognition from her peers in the New Mexico Academy of Physician Assistants (NMAPA) and was appointed to the American Academy of Physician Assistants House of Delegates for two consecutive years. She operated as NMAPA President-Elect from 2010 to 2011. Currently, Ms. Smoker serves as President of the New Mexico Academy of Physician Assistants.
