Michael Paul Sullivan

Advanced Scaffolder

I am a hard working person that thrives in a variety of situations. I enjoy working outdoors in teams and have found scaffolding to be a job that suits me well.

Over the last five years I have worked in a company that provides a range of services. Although generally working with scaffolding, I have also worked with temporary fencing, edge protection and assisted in customer service in our equipment hire section. In my most recent position, I had the opportunity to take on an operations management role. This involved managing a team of twelve and the associated organisational and health and safety responsibilities that entails.

I am a driven and motivated person who learns quickly. I am looking looking to further my career and take on more management responsibility. In my previous role, I have particularly enjoyed teaching and mentoring new scaffolders and seeing them become competent ticketed scaffolders.

    Work History

Operations Manager

R&S Trade Hire

In this role I was responsible for reorganising the scaffold division to maximize efficiency and profitability. I was responsible for weekly toolbox meetings and monthly team leader meetings. Ensuring the team leaders knew their job for the next day, had all appropriate paperwork and and specific tools or equipment for particular jobs. I was in charge of liaising with team leaders and customers to check the progress of jobs and organize the calendar accordingly. I also assisted our Contracts Supervisor with measuring and quoting.

Health and Safety

R&S Trade Hire

With our company expanding and there being an increased focus on scaffold safety in the construction industry I offered to be our Health and Safety representative. In this role I worked to implement a more effective H&S management system to comply with upcoming legislative changes. In this role I collected, recorded and investigated all incident and near miss reports, conducted site audits, conducted weekly checks of all scaffolds and reported the results of audits and investigations to management and to my colleagues in toolbox meetings.

Team Leader

R&S Trade Hire

As a Scaffold Team Leader I led two or three man teams on site. We often used temporary labour and my team members would be different from day to day, usually with English as a second language. This meant I had to be very organised in the yard and on site to ensure jobs were completed correctly and safely. As the rebuild in Christchurch ramped up we moved into more tube and clip scaffolding as the company expanded. During this time I was put through my Intermediate and Advanced Scaffolding Certificates. Our company also had a lot of work in the Clandeboye Fonterra plant and I was often entrusted with running teams outside of Christchurch for the week .

R&S Trade Hire/ Advanced Access Solutions

On returning from overseas I took a job as a scaffold labourer. My duties were split between working with Equiptec aluminum scaffolding and Layher All Round and Speedy scaffolding systems. As I was willing to learn and work with the steel Layher systems I eventually moved in to doing simple builds and was put through my Elementary Scaffolding ticket.

TESOL English Teacher

Thames School of Languages

I worked two one year contracts at a private language school in China. My responsibilities included planning and preparing lessons according to the textbooks being used and the abilities of the students. I taught a range of students from kindergarten through to high school.

Seaman / Seaman Officer

Royal New Zealand Navy

I joined the Navy as a Seaman Gunner and passed my basic training and trade training. I then spent time on three different ships over three years. During this time I completed my Able Seaman and Able Gunner task books to be promoted to Able Seaman Gunner. My responsibilities included ships maintenence, crane/RHIB operation, lookout, and helmsman duties.

After three years I applied to commission from the ranks and was accepted. I completed basic officer training and then began navigation school. I gained my Grade 3 Watchkeeper Certificate and was posted back to sea.  At sea I was responsible for the safe navigation of the ship, reporting to the Captain about the ships status and assisting with the maintenance of charts and planning safe passages and anchorages.
