Internet Systems Architect/Unix Manager

BlueMeteor, Inc.

Joined company within the first two months of the inception and, as such, had an opportunity to be in on the ground floor design and implementation of the company’s technologies as well as having a key role in the recruiting and management of the technical operations staff. Managed and mentored the Unix team and Windows NT Administrators. Also assisted in vendor relationship management, driving our company’s technology requirements into future vendor releases.

Consultant, Senior Program Management

Senior Program Manager originally brought in for a short-term contract to help kick off two projects, the role was quickly expanded to include managing the entire project portfolio for the Messaging, Voice and Data Networking teams, providing leadership and mentoring to a group of technical and project leads.  Portfolio includes twenty+ projects, and several large programs, including an Exchange migration from 2007 to 2010, implementation of universal messaging, upgrading of the Microsoft OCS to Lync and a replacement of all faxing solutions throughout Grainger with a standardized email based solution.  Also helped set standards and direction for organization wide project and program management and developed and implemented a project reporting system to provide status and early alerting to projects that are at risk to IT senior leadership.

Senior Data Center Consultant

Chicago Mercantile Exchange

Senior Data Center Consultant, reporting to the Managing Director of Colocation Services, a new business within CME tasked with the build out of both the physical data center and the development of all services to be offered to data center customers as well as selling the space to prospective customers. Brought into the project to act as the internal customer advocate, reviewing, authoring and designing the service offerings to be available at launch such as Remote Hands, NTP and the trading connection. Also developed the process to on-board 100 to 150 new customers within a four-month window all to be able to begin trading simultaneously. Mentored and trained staff members in colocation, customer service, documentation and process creation.

2009 - 2010

Consultant / Senior Technical Project Manager

University of Chicago

Senior Technical Project Manager for a 25-person project team tasked with a 20,000+ phone Cisco Voice over IP (VoIP) rollout for the University of Chicago, including over 200 buildings located in the university, the medical center and several remote sites.  The project had been operating for over three years with little momentum and was lacking requirements and structure. 

  • Rejuvenated the project and restarted the deployment of phones.
  • Developed criteria for building migration and a deployment schedule for all buildings on the university's voice network.
  • Initiated a building audit across campus to develop an estimated cost and duration for the project.
  • Restored the relationship between our project team and the University's Cisco Account Team.
  • Established the need for, kicked off and lead the selection of a new E911 product.
2005 - 2009

Chief Technical Architect


Managed and provided technical leadership to a team of six technical, infrastructure and data architects. 

  • Established, built and managed the Architecture group.
  • Established the Prod-Ops group, a cross of development and infrastructure skills, to quickly resolve customer issues.
  • Developed technical direction for ShopperTrak to allow the company to continue to grow at its continued rapid rate.
  • Presented to executive management and the board of directors gaining budget and approval for the project. 
  • Architected the solution and managed the project from design to production, including production management.
  • Engaged with customers to identify requirements and conducted follow-up sessions to determine that the solution fit
  • Developed test plans, QA procedures and processes for moving code from development through QA to production
  • New systems added over $30M in new revenue opportunities.
  • Developed and delivered on a six month plan to improve up time with a goal to move from 80% to 99.5%.
  • Three months into the project availability consistently measured 99.5% and reached 99.99% in less than six months.
  • Managed the migration of the environment from aging and undersized equipment to a redundant, virtualized environment. 
  • Lead the implementation of a new Java-based customer portal providing customers with access to analytical tools to better understand their customer footfall traffic and help our customers with staffing and other needs.
  • Selection of and negotiations with solutions providers resulting in lower operating costs and a more elastic staffing model.
  • Increased candidate quality for new hires by bringing in staffing firms to aid in-house recruiting.
2001 - 2005

Lead Systems Engineer/Internet Architect

Aon Corporation

Managed $250K/month outsourced Internet hosting, storage, security and networking providers to support multiple applications generating several million in revenue per month and provide internal technical and business consulting for Internet applications. 

  • Reduced hosting and managed service costs by over $500,000 per year by negotiating a new $2.8 million hosting contract.
  • Renegotiated storage contracts to save Aon $1.8 million over three years.
  • Developed chargeback mechanisms for internal billing of the hosting facility and budgeting purposes.
  • With only three months to implement, successfully negotiated hosting contract and managed the relocation of our 100+ server environment and its backup, SAN and networking equipment to a new hosting provider with minimal downtime.
  • Consolidated hosting environment and saved the company over $1M per year in licensing, hosting and support charges.
  • Increased availability of hosted applications by 15%.
1999 - 2000

Senior Unix Systems Administrator

Classified Ventures

Responsible for administration of the NewHomeNetwork and web sites. Monitoring of site performance and activity reporting utilities including Keynote, Accrue Insight and in-house written monitoring tools.

Contracted to perform various duties at Ameritech, Monsanto (Searle), CSC and CNA Insurance including administration/support of Novell, Windows, Unix and Cisco environments, web server administration.

Technical lead for team of five network and server administrators.  Responsible for developing automation tools, providing support for network, firewall, Unix, Novell and Windows systems, setting hardware and software standards. Relocated and redesigned the data center, negotiated over $100,000 in reduced costs for the project. Increased server availability by over 20%.
