I have worked with children throughout my high school, college, and university careers. I have coached children in athletic settings such as figure skating and softball, as well as completed placements at a variety of age levels.
I did a 6 week placement in a Grade 6 classroom, with a focus on teaching drama. This was part of an arts/theatre based course I was taking in Grade 12. I planned and taught drama lessons, as well as assisted the teacher with various other classroom duties. I accompanied the class on a field trip and planned a unit on a book they had been reading.
October 2005 and May 2006
I completed two 1 week placements in a Grade 3 class as part of a university course. I observed the teacher and students, and made notes on things such as classroom organization/management, and curriculum approaches. I also helped with classroom activities and marking.
May -June 2010
I did a 5 week placement at Ontario Early Years North Bay. I was responsible for supervision of children (parents were also present), planning and teaching classes for children and parents, and working with co-workers on a variety of activities and tasks. I gained experience teaching children from birth to 8 years of age. This was a very different setting from a typical classroom or school environment, but I gained many valuable skills and ideas.
July - August 2010
Following my placement with Ontario Early Years, I was asked to Co-Teach a kindergarten prep course for 4-5 year old beginning school in september who were not developmentally ready. This course provided a classroom setting in which the children could develop necessary skills and have social interaction prior to entering the classroom. I was responsible for planning and teaching kindergarten level lessons, and supervising the children throughout the sessions.
October - December 2010
I completed a 6 week practicum in a Grade 5/6 class. I was responsible for working along side the classroom teacher in all of her responsibilities, as well as planning an teaching a variety of lessons each day. During the last two weeks of the practicum I was responsible for teaching 75-100% of the school day. I taught lessons in Language, Art, and Music. I planned and implemented full units in Math and Social Studies.
During my time at the school, I also took part in a PLC, staff meetings, and planned and led an assembly on literacy strategies.
I am currently completing a 7-week practicum in a Grade 8 classroom.
