As a regional business leader in the Lake of the Ozarks region of Missouri, Merlyn Vandervort involves himself in real estate, construction, event promotion, marketing, business consulting, and the hospitality industry. As far back as 1993, in recognition of his growing business acumen, Inc. Magazine nominated Merlyn Vandervort as one of the choices for Entrepreneur of the Year. Recognizing that marketing and advertising play a crucial role in the success of any business venture, Merlyn Vandervort created a magazine to highlight many of his ventures. Toad Life is an oversized, high-quality magazine catering to visitors, vacationers, and second-home owners in the Lake of the Ozarks. As Editor-in-Chief of this venture, Merlyn Vandervort oversees the production of some 30,000 copies for circulation and occasionally contributes his own writing. In 1999, Merlyn Vandervort founded the Horny Toad Entertainment Complex. Over time, he founded other restaurants in the area, including a night club, sports bar, and dueling piano bar. More recently, Merlyn Vandervort opened Rumors Steakhouse in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. When Merlyn Vandervort first went into business for himself, he started out with a box of tools, a pickup truck, and a couple of thousand dollars in his pocket. His first company, Metro Renovators & Construction Service, Inc., launched in 1989 in Kansas City, Missouri. Less than a decade later, Merlyn Vandervort led a staff of more than 100 professionals. In 1998, the venture, which then encompassed several companies, was acquired by Inrecon LLC/Belfor USA. Merlyn Vandevort holds memberships in the National Association of Home Builders, the National Restaurant Association, and the National Institute of Disaster Restoration. He received designation from the Builders Institute as a Certified Graduate Remodeler, and is a Certified Master Builder under the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City. In 1993, Vandervort received his CR (Certified Restorer) designation from the National Institute of Disaster Restoration. For recreation, Merlyn Vandervort enjoys motorcycle riding, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and boating.
