Principal IT Engineer

Member of a select UNIX/Linux Administration team assigned to company engineering and business units as the primary interface between world-wide corporate infrastructure groups.

• Become the focal point to discuss, negotiate, and facilitate actions between infrastructure, engineering, and other corporate teams to resolve problems in a quick and timely manner to keep engineering units working at high capacity.• Analyze computerized engineering processes to improve performance.• Keep business units informed on infrastructure situations that could cause significant process issues and represent these concerns to infrastructure teams.• Enforce corporate computer policies through effective communications to each assigned Business Unit.• Maintain day-to-day operations of the corporate world-wide computer infrastructure, including monitoring, load balancing, repair and rebuild for the 1000s of computer systems (Solaris, Linux RedHat, Ubuntu), 100s of filers (Netapp, Isilon). Maintain security and access (yp,apache, sudo, automounter), networking (yp,dns), issues as well as limited database work (MySQL) as need arises.• Perform storage and compute capacity planning.• Manage resources for engineering groups using the IBM Platform LSF Computing Grid System.• Help in problem analysis, and corrective procedures for serious user problems and issues that merit serious, critical, and sometimes unique support requirements

Jan 2009 - Apr 2012

Senior System Administrator

Worked on the improvement, development, deployment, and administration of a secure, stable UNIX infrastructure environments for R&D programming and processes. Designed and implemented continuous improvement initiatives targeting performance, availability, and security. Supervised identification and remediation of critical issues.

·Re-energize and reduce operating costs of an aging R&D infrastructure (about 500 hosts) by:

oEngaging in a patch upgrade and management procedure

oReplacement of old obsolete hardware with new improved hardware

oMoving operating environments from hardware to VM where appropriate

oStreamline and generating new operating processes

oEstablishment of Configuration Management

oEnhance overall security through configuration and process changes

oArchitect and replace the previous monitoring system

2007 - 2009

Staff Systems Administrator

Directed development, deployment, and administration of secure, stable infrastructure environments for

large application programs. Coordinated infrastructure groups in implementing systems hardware, operating

systems, networks, storage architectures, and monitoring systems. Managed application installation and

performance tuning. Ensured continuous environment availability, support, stability, and scalability.

Designed and implemented continuous improvement initiatives targeting performance, availability, and

security. Supervised identification and remediation of critical issues.

  • Spearheaded successful implementation of a full-scale IT infrastructure environment governing two major applications, PTC Windchill and Protex/IP. Both systems featured 99.9% availability and low failover times.
  • Improved version control processes and reduced expenses by developing and implementing the Subversion code control system on a RedHat Linux virtual server.
  • Boosted performance by more than 10% by fine-tuning PTC Windchill and associated Java virtual engine components.
  • Developed a complex, login-free shared network data mounting solution.
  • Introduced down-to-the-second database rollback capabilities for Protex/IP backup and restore functions.
  • Cut recovery time from backup tapes from 3 to 1 days through introduction of new recovery processes for Windchill and Protex/IP.
  • Devised streamlined solutions to multiple ongoing issues via team collaboration and innovation.
  • Enabled application environment health and usage tracking by developing customer infrastructure reports.
2003 - 2007

Senior Systems Admnistrator

National aerospace and defense contracting company.

Led the design and rollout of UNIX infrastructure systems and processes that answered the technology

requirements of multiple engineering groups. Addressed and documented user community concerns.

Leveraged requirements to develop modifications to the infrastructure as needed, including improvements to process efficiency and management. Utilized open source solutions to control costs and improve systems and procedures. Administered and maintained the infrastructure environment.

  • Simplified disk space availability for the user community and enabled purchase of smaller, more powerful server systems by transitioning away from a server-centric infrastructure to a storage-centric infrastructure based on a RAID6 fibre channel storage network.
  • Reduced expenses by replacing Microsoft Windows Primary Domain Controller and authorization with Linux-based open source application SAMBA.
  • Developed and introduced a fully-functional Linux tape backup system, utilizing a DLT tape library to replace a completely non-functional system.
  • Eliminated the need for SSL certificates by designing a Certificate Authority for internal websites.
  • Successfully developed and launched a DHCP system capable of issuing static addresses to valid computers. The system featured a support tool for data entry and modification that eliminated the need for administrator support.
  • Launched more than 10 secure Apache websites for multiple projects using SSL certificates.
  • Enhanced software/source management for the engineering department by implementing SourceFourge.
1990 - 2003

Independent consultancy focused on providing Linux support and services to diverse clients.

Founded and grew a successful consulting company with a broad, stable client base. Evaluated client

procedures, identified business technology problems and requirements, and discussed potential resolutions with client executives. Led multiple engagements to improve reliability, stability, and uptime for client Linux / Unix environments. Coordinated government contracts to enforce classified computing procedures, draft design and development specifications, and create multi-function experimental file systems. Programmed custom applications and tools as needed, resulting in enhancements to system capabilities and response times. Administered client infrastructures.

  • Built a commercial Linux and Apache website infrastructure from scratch, enabling a startup company to grow to handle more than 50 systems with over 1,000 websites and domains.
  • Delivered significant savings for multiple clients by implementing open source programming to replace more expensive applications and tools, including C compilers.
  • Architected a multi-system UNIX configuration management infrastructure.
  • Engineered consistency for a client printing system and reduced manpower requirements by devising a system that allowed one person to maintain multi-nation printer configurations across more than 20 HP/UX systems.
  • Lowered work volume for the client quality assurance group, increased release package generation speed, and enhanced responsiveness to the development community by designing an automated package build system based wholly on shell scripting.
  • Successfully completed a project to integrate Unix into a small military system.
  • Supported the open source Apache project by delivering correction code for integration into the release product.
