PIHRA hosted the Second Annual Diversity and Cross-Cultural Leadership Summit designed to foster a dialogue in the Southern California business community on diversity and cross-cultural leadership issues. The Summit provided practical and applicable resources, tools, and information to Business Leaders and HR Professionals. Summit workshops and panels focused on both diversity and cross-cultural education. The Summit was designed to move beyond the discussion of diversity onto practical strategies designed to create an inclusive workplace and business strategies that reflect and respect Southern California's multicultural environment.
Facets 2006: Celebrating the Facets of Diversity - A Community Carnivale 2006 saw the development and presentation of the fourth-annual "Celebrating the Facets of Diversity - A Community Carnivale" program. Hosted at the Broward County Convention Center in June 2006, this diversity extravaganza was a mosaic of diversity programs and entertainment, foods representing a variety of nationalities and an expo featuring non-profit community-based organizations. With 25% of the total local population speaking a primary language other than English, the chapter identified a need to build communities that embrace and value diversity and bring resources that can help HR professionals implement diversity programs in the workplace.The primary purpose of Facets 2006 was to bring together the South Florida HR community and diverse community-based organizations to promote the cross-pollination of our shared knowledge and purposes. More than 15 community-based organizations were invited to display their programs and communicate their services to an audience of over 200 HR professionals. Additionally, the audience was treated to diverse entertainment, reflecting the sights and sounds of the South Florida community. Food stations showcased the diverse tastes of the community, and the entire Carnivale culminated in a program on the power of diversity delivered by Al Dotson, Jr. Esq., National Chair of the 100 Black Men of America and 2006 President of the Orange Bowl Committee. As a result of this program, HRABC created outreach efforts that led to closer and continued partnerships with numerous community-based organizations and helped chapter members expand diversity efforts within their organizations.
Our goal was to provide excitement around the concept of diversity to attract interest and participation, and then to bring diversity-related resources to the attention of HR professionals. At the same time, HRABC wanted to familiarize the large array of community-based organizations with the HR professional community, so that they could better communicate the resources and services they offer to those most interested. The goals of the program were based on the HRABC Diversity Team Principles: Culture is not better or worse, just different; Diversity is about encouraging and enabling all employees to draw fully on their talents and skills for the benefits of the business; Diversity means good management of people - all people. The Facets programs have been recognized by Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Broward County Mayor Diana Wasserman Rubin and the Sun-Sentinel and The Palm Beach Post.
