Mazie Brewington served in the United States Army for more than 20 years before retiring as a Sergeant Major to pursue a career in collegiate management. During her military career, she honed her leadership skills and advanced her education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Management from Columbia College in Missouri and a Master of Business Administration from Troy State University (now Troy University) in Alabama. As a result of this training, Mazie Brewington was well prepared to operate in her first collegiate position, Business Manager and Administrative Services Manager of Laney College. Presently, she serves as Vice President of Administrative and Business Services for the Merced Community College District in Northern California. Mazie Brewington began her post-military career at Laney College in Oakland, California, in 1999. Her responsibilities at the school included managing funds of more than $30 million and overseeing the bursar’s office, communications division, physical plant maintenance, police and custodial services, and mailroom. Ms. Brewington joined the Chabot-Las Positas Community College District in Pleasanton, California, in 2002; for the next four years, she oversaw a range of district-level operations, including finances, payroll, and budgeting. From 2006 until she accepted her current position in 2009, Ms. Brewington served as Vice President of Administrative and Business Services for the Solano Community College District in Fairfield, California. Her primary achievements with this district included managing $125 million in bond funds and overseeing a range of modernization and new construction projects.Currently, Mazie Brewington directs finances, budgeting, payroll, purchasing, employee benefits, facilities maintenance, and numerous other operations for the 20,000-student, 800-employee Merced Community College. Mazie Brewington also actively participates in professional groups such as the Association of California Community College Administrators, Association of Chief Business Officials, and Community College Internal Auditors.
