Head of HR Central and Eastern Europe


Matthew’s current role is Head of HR for Aviva Europe. Matthew is currently responsible for the development and execution of the Aviva HR strategy for Central & Eastern Europe Region (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Romania, Turkey). Working with the region’s leadership team, Matthew has created and implemented a roadmap against each element of the HR Strategy with the aim to standardize policy and process and share best practice across the region. (Talent Mgt, Reward, Recruitment)

On joining Aviva, Matthew became an integral part in the creation and the implementation of a joint venture with AK Bank. Whilst at Aviva, Matthew has also led a number of key initiatives for the entire European region

·Business Realignment - the design and implementation of a new regional vertical business-operating model.

·IT Shared Services - working with the regions CIOs and Deloites, assessing the capability of creating IT Application Shared Services for the Central & Eastern European Region

·HR Transformation - interacting with PWC and the Global Core Transition Team, Matthews’s role was to determine viability and impact of the creation of HR Shared Services for the European region.

Senior HR Business Partner Europe

In 2006 Matthew returned to the UK and held a Senior HR Role with Cisco Systems, partnering the European Vertical Sales, Marketing and Consultancy practice.In this role Matthew acted as sounding board, advisor and coach to senior leaders and change agent, managing pan-European issues.Matthew also held responsibility to manage and implement company and organization specific programs to drive productivity and improve revenue and margin on Cisco’s offerings.

In 2003, Matthew was recruited and joined Electronic Data Systems (EDS) to raise the capability and commerciality of the HR function. Matthew’s initial role was partnering the EMEA Sales and Business Process Outsourcing businesses. During this successful period in supporting the creation ofF&A shared services and participating in various M&A activity in EMEA, Matthew was awarded the EDS HR President award for excellence. This resulted in a transfer to EDS Headquarters in Dallas, Texas where Matthew undertook a Senior HR Global role partnering the Business Process Outsourcing and CIO organizations.

My role as Business Partner was to support the Corporate Investment Banking Division of CBFM“. “Corporate Investment Banking (CIB) provides a dedicated, focused and sector specialized service to both corporate and financial institutions, which represents a substantial proportion of CBFM's overall business revenue /income.” 879 employees based in UK, Europe, USA and Asia Pacand Revenue / income of £750million

In addition to the day to day HR activities, my role is to manage a large variety of project based work. Some of these are outlined below.

·Managed and developed 3 HR Consultants.

·Identified and implement global resourcing requirements for 2003.

·Created and Implemented 2003 Discretionary Bonus Plan.

·Created and implemented Graduate Development Framework for CIB.

·Implemented Performance Management Framework for CIB.

·Interface with reward team for 2003 Benchmarking and Reward Cycle.

·Developed a new Induction programme for Corporate Investment Banking.

British Telecom & Concert Inc

Prior to Electronic Data Systems, Matthew was recruited and joined British Telecom (BT) In 1999, Matthew was aligned to BT Worldwide to assist in the creation of Concert a $7.5 billion joint venture with AT&T. Matthew was a lead player in establishing the Concert culture and the rollout of the Global HR Policy Framework. Matthew transitioned to Concert, during this period he continued to partner a MNC and Wholesale Sales organizations globally. This resulted in Matthew gaining exposure to the business across the US, Europe and Asia Pac regions.

In 2002, a decision was made by the stakeholders to unwind the Concert JV, Matthew was a key player in managing the unwind of the business back to the parents within the UK and across the EMEA region, during Matthew’s time at Concert, Matthew received the Concert’s President’s individual and team award for outstanding contribution.

Matthew’s first HR role with British Telecom was as a Compensation & Benefits Manager for BT Group.

Having played four sports at regionallevel, I have always been a sportsman and enjoy the competitive spirit.Within the sports arena, Rugby has been my focus.I have played at the national level representing Wales U20, British Polytechnics, British Universities and Welsh Students.
