Summary

My background in PR and communications led me to publishing and technology, where I found my calling in community management. I’ve worn a variety of hats, but the underlying work is the same: building community and connecting like minds.

I thrive in a fast-paced work environment with a supportive team who works together to make a difference for both the company and community.

Specialities

  • Building engagement around a product, advocating for the community's needs, and facilitating  conversations

  • Keeping a pulse on what’s new and interesting via in-person events and online engagement
  • Researching new opportunities and coming up with strategic plans to tackle obstacles in our path

  • Skilled listener, speaker, editor, and writer. Whether incoming or outgoing, I excel at getting someone’s story, and presenting it effectively to the proper audience, whether via text, video, or presentation.

Work History

Community Builder

Chef Software, Inc.
Jun 2014 - Aug 2015

I was a "Jill of all trades" at Chef, switching gears from developing strategies to expand the presence of Chef in green field cities, to interviewing community leaders on camera, to organizing our presence at various conferences around the world. I helped to bridge the gap between our awesome community and our talented product team, while negotiating the balance of our paying customers and our open source contributors.

Community Manager, Velocity

O'Reilly Media, Inc.
Oct 2012 - Jun 2014

I forged the way for community managers at O'Reilly, building the role out of my desire to connect with our audience and ensure that we were meeting their needs. I worked closely with content editors conference chairs to guide both the direction and content of our products, while fostering relationships with the web performance and operations communities worldwide.

Publicist

O'Reilly Media, Inc.
Jun 2006 - Oct 2012

I was promoted through the ranks at O’Reilly, switching job titles every few years as I grew and invested my time in various projects. Among other things, I wrote the social media marketing strategy for the company, and grew our Facebook page to 41,000+ fans. I also helped build the Ignite® brand from a small, community-driven gathering, to a large, worldwide occurrence. Toward the end of my time in the PR and Marketing Department, I was in charge of a company-wide editorial calendar that included any and all upcoming events (e.g. webcasts, book releases, conferences, blogposts, etc.,) as well as the liaison to our 6 publishing partners.
