Projects and proposals ranged from environmental baseline analysis, environmental ipact studies, biodiversity impact assessments, enviromental monitoring and management plan, biodiversity enhancement, habitat restoration, habitat creation, wetland management plan, invasive species action plan, water quality impact studies, shoreline erosion, beach nourishment, coral reef surveys, artificial reef design. Also responsible for mentoring junior and mid-level ecologists and providing technical advice on the company's technical practice network on ecology, marine science and coral reef ecology. Eventually became the team leader and became responsible for the daily operations of the Environmental & Ecological Planning SE Asia under the Planning, Design and Development business line.

Marine Biologist/Business Development Coordinator - Philippines

As marine biologist, duties included proposal preparation and project implementation. Conducted intertidal, seagrass, mangrove, fish and coral surveys for environmental impact assessments or environmental monitoring and management programmes as well as conducting research projects. Responsibilities also included commercial project sourcing, coordinating research collaboration with local universities and project development in the Philippines. Notable projects included impact assessment of reclamation works and port expansion, mangrove restoration and artificial reef design.

Involved in several projects spanning about 5 years. Major projects included:

1)   Philippine Pharmaseas Drug Discovery Program - Conducted habitat surveys, specimen collection, experimentation and data analysis in support of the Marine Drug Discovery Program from Sponge-Associated Microorganisms for Anti-Infective Agents and Turrid Snails for Anti-pain Agents component.

2)   Ocean Color for Sustainable Fisheries Project - Integrated field survey data for use in satellite image interpretations. Major output was a technical paper on deriving seagrass areal cover from shoot density  data and a poster on remote sensing and the selection of MPAs

3)    Pacific Seaboard R & D Program Project 1: Assessment of Reef Resources of the Eastern Seaboard of the Philippines - Conducted assessment and inventory of seaweed and seagrass resources along the coasts of the eastern Philippines. A digital photo-library of the seaweed collections of the project was also prepared.

4)    Integrated Coastal Enhancement - Coastal Research for Adaptive Management for Climate Change (ICE CREAM) - Participated in and organized a ship-based research expedition to the Tubbataha Reefs, Palawan in May 2009

5)    Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape Project - Participated in and organized a ship-based research expedition to the Sulu Sea, including the Tubbataha Reefs and isolated reefs bordering Malaysia in May 2006

GEF/WB Master's Scholar

University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute

Completed a Master of Science in Marine Science major in Marine Biology while serving as a research assistant for the Upgrading Coral Taxonomic Support for the GEF Coral Reef Targeted Research and Capacity Building for Management Project. Duties included assisting in the conduct of nationwide coral taxonomy and parataxonomy trainings involving corallum and field identification; publication of field guides and posters; developing and maintaining a virtual museum on Philippine corals ( and preparation of the "Guide to the Common Corals of the Bolinao-Anda Reef Complex" for publication . Other tasks included the conduct of coral surveys, specimen collection, photography and species identification and the maintenace of two coral museums. Completed the thesis on "Coral community structure of the Bolinao Reef Complex, Northwest Philippines" and developed a simple and cheap alternative to survey benthic communities using digital photography. 

Also served as the research associate for the GEF/WB CRTR Common Sampling Project which conducted coral reef monitoring surveys of a total of 110 random transects and 78 permanent quadrats in two localities in the Philippines using the same coral reef sampling protocol being conducted in other GEF CRTR Centers of Excellence in the world. Technical paper preparation, public presentation, care and maintenance of diving and survey gear were also essential parts of the position.

Part of the United Nations Compensation Commission - Coral Reef Surveys in Support of the Marine and Coastal Damage Assessment Project based at the Centre for Environment and Water - Research Institute. Duties included the conduct of quarterly assessments (reef fish visual census, coral coring, sediment and water quality data collection) to evaluate the possible impacts of the 1991 Persian Gulf War Oil Spill on the coral reefs of Saudi Arabia. Participated in and organized an 8,11 and 15-day quarterly ship-based marine surveys of the Western Arabian Gulf.
