As the president and founder of Capstone Educational Consultants, LLC, Mark Cruver utilizes his experience in academia and human resources to offer guidance to students applying to colleges. Mark Cruver belongs to the Higher Education Consultants Association. Founded in 1997, the Higher Education Consultants Association has served as an important professional organization for independent college admissions consultants. Initially comprised of 38 individuals, today the group has approximately 800 members, who are responsible for reviewing and evaluating the college applications of more than 18,000 high school seniors. Members must subscribe to the tenets of the association's Standards and Ethics Statement, which include sound advice, integrity, and confidentiality. Every year, the Higher Education Consultants Association hosts an annual conference to inform members about the latest developments in the field. The 2014 meeting will take place over five days in June in Portland, Oregon. Entitled “Confluence,” this year’s conference will feature Jeffrey Selingo as the keynote speaker. His 2013 book, College (Un)Bound: The Future of Higher Education and What It Means for Students, explores various concerns that parents and others have for the next generations of university students. Beyond Selingo's presentation, the event will also feature sessions on topics such as examining how college admission decisions are made, assisting artistic students, and planning financially for college.
