REPORTING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Public Safety: Story in 2007 dissected mid-air collision over La Mesaand revealed mistakes by air traffic controllers, pilots before completion of federal probe; Story in 2003 identified lost hunter & pilot who rescued him after he ignited Cedar Fire, California's largest wildfire.
  • Government: Covered city councils, transit and regional planning boards, school boards and hospitals. Stories revealed crime-plagued San Diego bus yard and dozens of firings that overseers sought to conceal; school trustee who nodded off during candidate forum; passage of landmark, slow-growth law in Oceanside.
  • Investigative: Series in 2003 on decade of officer-involved shootings showed San Diego police had nearly top shooting rate among state's law enforcement. Series in 1990 revealed politics, secret history behind plan to build $400 million trash incinerator in San Marcos. Like the $1 sale  of development right to build incinerators at all public landfills countywide. Project scrapped after $140 million "front end" of recycling center was closed for poor performance.
