Within her hometown of Gig Harbor, Washington, Margaret Loughren has actively participated in several community service activities. As an assistant teacher and tutor at Kopachuck Middle School, she developed lesson plans, graded papers, and helped eighth-grade students with their coursework. Margaret Loughren also served for three years as a member of the Gig Harbor High School (GHHS) chapter of REACH/WAYS Club, an organization that coordinates HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns and other community-oriented projects. During the summer of 2013, she volunteered at St. Anthony Hospital, where she assisted with clerical duties, such as distributing correspondence.
After earning nomination to National Honor Society and graduating with honors from GHHS, Ms. Loughren enrolled at Western Washington University (WWU) in Bellingham, Washington. Inspired by the assistance she has received from her own school counselors, she plans on pursuing a major in psychology to prepare for a career as a university mental health counselor. She also maintains an intellectual interest in history and courses that deal with subjects such as World War II.
Outside of her academic studies, Margaret Loughren enjoys knitting for relaxation, watching Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson films, listening to American and Korean pop music, and playing piano. A fitness enthusiast, she lifts weights and practices both Zumba and Pilates. Ms. Loughren also hikes on the paths at the Sehome Hill Arboretum that borders WWU and travels to various Pacific Northwest hiking destinations, such as Mount Baker and Mount Rainier.
