As part of IAT, ATHS Dubai offers a career-based technical education to approximately 950 fourteen to eighteen year old Emirati boys and with effect from September 2012 has added a vocational stream to the school curriculum.  As librarian I am responsible to the Academic Vice-principal for the daily running of the Learning Resource Centre.  Duties include:

  •  ordering resources within an agreed budget of up to Dhs1m to support both the curriculum and reading for pleasure.
  •  creating an Information Literacy programme in collaboration with other ATHS campus librarians to develop the learning skills of all our students. 
  • becoming familiar with and using Web 2.0 tools to meet IAT’s aim of integrating technology into the classroom and offering 1:1 learning to the students.

  • using Sierra LMS to catalogue and manage circulation of resources.

  • leading the team to develop the school website and produce a monthly newsletter for parents ans students.

    Senior Librarian

    The English College offers a UK-based curriculum to approximately 300 primary and 650 secondary school students.  As senior librarian I was responsible to the Headteacher for the running of primary and secondary school libraries.  My duties included:

    • setting up the primary school library from scratch.
    • introducing the Eclipse/ Junior Librarian web-based library management system.
    • developing an Information Skills programme for primary school.
    • managing the budget and ordering resources for both libraries.
    • co-ordinating the annual overseas order for secondary school.
    • setting up and running email messaging for parents.

    At the time of my employment Sharjah English School was a long-established, not-for-profit primary school offering a UK curriculum to approximately 350 pupils aged three to eleven.  Answering to the Headmaster, amongst other duties, I

    • set up the school's first automated library management system: Junior Librarian
    • devised and taught a library skills course to pupils aged 5 - 11
    • updated and developed the library collection
    • organised the school's first book week which culminated in a "Dress as your favourite book character" day with the costumes being judged by Isobel Abulhoul.
    • worked with the school secretary to oversee and process applications to the school and manage the enrolment lists for the Ministry of Education.

    Warden, Queen's Hall of Residence

    RGIT (now Robert Gordon's University), Aberdeen, UK

    Queen's Hall of Residence offered catered accommodation to 80 first year female students of Robert Gordon's Institute of Technology.  As Warden I supervised 3 full-time and 8 part-time staff, answering to the Secretary to the Institute for the day-to-day running of the hall which included taking responsibility for the welfare of the students in my care, menu planning, ordering provisions and managing accounts.

    Book Week 2016

    Building on the success of the previous three years  Book Week to develop with more events and more competitions.  The Spelling Bee has been expanded to include three grade levels with an  inter-campus final for eight participating schools.

    Teaching Skills for Librarians 2010

    A one day workshop I organised in 2010 for 32 school and university librarians run by Chris Powis, Head of Library and Learning Services at the University of Northampton, UK.

    The English College Dinner Dance 2007

    Principal organiser of EC's first dinner dance which raised over Dhs40,000 in aid of the school's charity drive to send students to Everest Base Camp with Gulf for Good and to support children in Nepal.

    BSME School Librarians Workshop 2006

    3 day workshop arranged with sponsorship from Magrudy's Bookshop attended by 33 librarians from 4 GCC countries and led by Geoff Dubber, Past President of the School Library Association.  Topics focused on Information Literacy, Raising the Profile of the Library and Managing Behaviour in the School Library.
