Fionnuala Harvey

I have worked as an Electrical Engineer in the fields of Ocean Energy as well as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean before completing my Yachtmaster Offshore in search of a more hands on and physical career.

I have several thousands of nautical miles logged (approx 20000nm), including transatlantics and extensive sailing experience around Europe and the Caribbean on both cruising yachts and oceanographic research vessels.

I am hard working, adaptable to different situations, physically fit, pay attention to detail, enjoy working as a team, calm and coordinated in difficult situations,  resilient in tough conditions, have good stamina, rapid reflexes and a good sense of humour and camaraderie.

Swimming ‐ swam competitively through my teens, beach lifeguarded in summers through Uni, voluntary water safety instructor in rural coastal communities for a few weeks each summer

Hiking – I like to explore wherever I happen to end up

Sailing – I try to spend my time doing yacht deliveries between research projects. I sail for fun on a friends 40ft Beneteau 1st

Research Engineer - Marine Optics and Remote Sensing Dept

Laboratoire d'Oceanographie, CNRS

Deployment of a bio-optical Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, the Webb Research Slocum Glider, in the Mediterranean Sea in order to address specific regional problems.

The Slocum is a purpose built low-power 2m long torpedo-shaped vehicle that glides to a maximum depth of 1000m sampling salinity, temperature, turbidity, irradiance, oxygen and fluorescence for a continuous period of about 3 weeks while transmitting the data in near-real-time to a control station on land.

Development of programmable mission files and integration of sensors for specific research expeditions. Regular sea expeditions running software to acquire bio-optical data.

Extensive periods spent offshore on research vessels.
