Registered Nurse

Ispwich General Hospital

I am currently employed by Queensland Health at IpswichHospital on a medical ward with a respiratory focus. This position demands an extremely high level of organisation and time management as well as the ability to relate to a variety of people from patients and their families to medical and allied health staff. Nursing in this environment requires teamwork as well as the ability to work autonomously. Delegation to other staff members and preceptoring students occurs on a daily basis.

Tasks involve assisting patients with hygiene and dietary needs, administering medications via oral and intravenous means, dressing wounds, taking observations, managing acutely ill patients in respiratory distress, care of patients requiring isolation for Tuberculosis, Pertussiss, Swine Flu and Micro Alerts as well as adhering to OH&S polices and documenting provision of all care.

This position involved organising ski package holidays via the telephone for Big White Ski Resort. I undertook 2 weeks of training before job commencement, learning a specific computer program to become competent in booking accommodation, lift passes, equipment rental, ski and snow board lessons as well as domestic flights within Canada. Camp Counselor

Camp Schodack

This position was arranged via an international agency and entailed working in upstate New York, U.S.A for 9 weeks as a hiking and adventure counsellor with children aged 7-15 years.

I, along with my co-counsellor, was responsible for developing hiking and camping itineraries and was delegated supervision of children in both rural (day trips and overnight hikes) and urban (skill building activities on-camp) settings. Teaching and coaching the children, as well as being a positive role model was also part of my job.

Graduate Registered Nurse

This position involved participating in a 12 month program consisting of two 6 month rotations on a medical and a surgical ward. My second rotation was on a 32 bed surgical ward specialising in the care of urology, colorectal, plastics and ENT patients pre and post-operatively.

Employed on a 76 hour per fortnight contract, I attended 6 compulsory study days, 24 in-services, completed 5 Self-Directed Learning Packages and a Quality Improvement Project that earned an award for “Best Display Presentation”.

I have obtained competencies in male and female catheterisation, manual handling, Modified Advanced Life Support (MALS) and managed opioid infusions including Patient Controlled Analgesia pumps (PCAs), Nurse Controlled Analgesia pumps (NCAs), epidurals and regional nerve block infusions.
