Art Teacher

Allen ISD

Teaching is passion, patience, excitement and above all it is about empathy.

As a high school art teacher, I have found that you have to capture their hearts before you can capture their minds. I strive to provide a rich and meaningful educational experience for all of my students by offering opportunities above and beyond the everyday classroom.

Enrichments I supervise for my students include:
Online Classroom Management Program, "Canvas"
Teacher-run Art Blog
Interactive Discussion Boards
After School Open Studio Art Activities
Artist Visits and Lectures
Art Clubs and National Art Honor Society
Digital Art and Photography Activities
Curatorial and Gallery Events on Campus
Installation Art Opportunities Around Campus
Over 10 Art Contests and Shows Each Year

I am a co-sponsor for the National Art Honor Society, an academic and service society. We have over 100 students enrolled and have won over $4000 for our students through art contests, scholarships and auctions.

I had the privileged to be be the UIL Academic Spelling coach for our high school team.

Lesson Plans

Every school has a different personality and every class a different set of needs. The art classroom is a place to be challenged, a place to explore, a place to share ideas and a place to grow. Teaching is not an easy task but one well worth the work. For more information on lesson plans, please visit www.laurahelms.wix.com/artonline

Teacher Stories

Students have won contests, earned college money, served in the community, taught pottery to the visually impaired, and brought disaster relief to neighboring states. High School students have so much potential!

In the Community

Kids need an opportunity to look beyond themselves and see a greater purpose for their work. It is a joy to create opportunities for kids to grow and shine.
