Teaching is passion, patience, excitement and above all it is about empathy.
As a high school art teacher, I have found that you have to capture their hearts before you can capture their minds. I strive to provide a rich and meaningful educational experience for all of my students by offering opportunities above and beyond the everyday classroom.
Enrichments I supervise for my students include:
Online Classroom Management Program, "Canvas"
Teacher-run Art Blog
Interactive Discussion Boards
After School Open Studio Art Activities
Artist Visits and Lectures
Art Clubs and National Art Honor Society
Digital Art and Photography Activities
Curatorial and Gallery Events on Campus
Installation Art Opportunities Around Campus
Over 10 Art Contests and Shows Each Year
I am a co-sponsor for the National Art Honor Society, an academic and service society. We have over 100 students enrolled and have won over $4000 for our students through art contests, scholarships and auctions.
I had the privileged to be be the UIL Academic Spelling coach for our high school team.
District Team Champions 2013, 2014

Regional 1st Place Team, 2014

An opportunity to work with adults of all ages who want to enrich their lives through Continuing Education pottery classes.
An opportunity to teach, manage people, handle parent concerns, make curriculum, organize events, keep the books, change diapers, drive the school bus, do local and national marketing, and always do my best to make my boss look like a Rock Star.
An opportunity to test my flexibility and classroom management skills.
A great opportunity to see how a wonderful charter school runs and to do the things I love- encourage kids and teach art.
An opportunity to teach one-on-one with an older student.
A great opportunity to work with professors, teachers and artists to reach the next generation.
A fabulous opportunity to learn how to write grants and work with at-risk students, both middle school and high school.
Every school has a different personality and every class a different set of needs. The art classroom is a place to be challenged, a place to explore, a place to share ideas and a place to grow. Teaching is not an easy task but one well worth the work. For more information on lesson plans, please visit www.laurahelms.wix.com/artonline
Easily adapted for younger students, this lesson allows students to visit another culture and imagine.
A challenging project that forces students to see collage in a new way.
Let the hand follow the eye across a familiar friend- our shoes!
Finding hidden textures in the everyday world and using creativity to bring out the hidden creatures.
Creating designs and images in a new way, as well as exploring color.
Turning simple fabric and yarn into something worthwhile and full of personality.
Kids need an opportunity to look beyond themselves and see a greater purpose for their work. It is a joy to create opportunities for kids to grow and shine.
