Childcare Worker

Daisy Chain

I have been able to volunteer at Daisy chain which is an organisation especially designed for children who have autism. I will continue to volunteer here until July of this year; its something which I very much enjoy. I am able to adapt my behaviour and teaching techniques to individual children to allow them to reach the best of their potential. Working with a child who has autism is challenging as each child has different triggers etc however I feel I am flexible and understanding of this behaviour and can easily adapt in any situation I have been in so far.

University Placement

Priory Woods

I am currently still studying at University and so have not had the opportunity in which to gain paid work in the field in which I wish to work. I graduate in the summer with BA Hons in Childhood Studies. Whilst on this course I have been given the opportunity to work in a school on placement on two separate occasions both for a substantial amount of time. I worked in a school specifically designed for students with SEN and disabilities, whilst here I worked with children between the ages of 3 and 10; as well as varying ages the severity of the children's disabilities ranged from MLD to PMLD. Working in this environment I was able to contribute to each child's progress developing the skills and knowledge I have learnt in university. I was able to monitor children's behaviour and was able to learn skills to cope with behaviour of different children depending on their disability; examples including Down Syndrome and Autism. In university I have been able to choose an elective module in which I have obtained a high grade; this module was Special needs and Disability. I carried out my dissertation in a special needs school focusing on how children who are disabled are included with other children; inclusion is something I am extremely passionate about as I have a family member who also has SEN.

Real Gap

I was given the opportunity to volunteer in Thailand with children who were both special needs, throughout this opportunity I was able to communicate with those children who had special educational needs by using PECs and other communications systems. Despite the language barrier I was able to communicate children's needs effectively and build relationships with them. As well as initiating and participating in play we were also able to teach the children basic English which I found extremely humbling. This opportunity has heighted my ambition to work with disabled and special needs students in either a play or education setting.
