Ashland, Oregon, resident Leonard Gotshalk has built a varied career over the past 35 years, exhibiting leadership and a commitment to excellence in his pursuits. Demonstrating strong abilities in both football and basketball in his youth, Gotshalk won The Doyle Scholarship to attend Santa Rosa Junior College in California in 1967. While at Santa Rosa, Leonard Gotshalk earned Most Valuable Player honors in basketball and All-Conference honors in football, and was named Captain for both the basketball and football teams. He transferred to Humboldt State University in Arcata, California, after earning his Associate degree in 1969.
As an offensive lineman, Gotshalk captained the University’s football team and was named a Little All-American as well as an All-Conference player. In 1971, he was drafted in the eighth round by the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League, making him the highest NFL Draft choice in Humboldt State’s history. After one season with the Eagles, Leonard Gotshalk went on to play for the Atlanta Falcons for the final six years of his football career, gaining recognition as both a leader and team player. He was chosen as the Team Representative to the NFL Players Association and as Team Captain his final year.
An entrepreneur as well, Leonard Gotshalk established a Black Angus cattle ranch in Lakeport, California, called Gotshalk Rainbow Ranch, the same year he joined the NFL. Running every aspect of the ranch during his tenure in the League and for more than 20 years afterward, Gotshalk became an expert in herd management and animal husbandry, and was selected as Director for the Western States Angus Association. In 1976, he also entered the insurance business. He signed on as a pension and profit-sharing specialist for The Lincoln National Life Insurance Company. His exceptional performance led him to be named Salesman of the Year just three years later. Leonard Gotshalk left the company in 1982 to focus solely on his own ventures, Rainbow Ranch and Gotshalk Enterprises, a real estate development and investment firm he founded in 1974. He remains President of the company to this day.
