Patient Safety Specialist

Provide significant contributions to multiple patient safety and regulatory committees; including those focused on medication management and safety.Author patient safety literature used within Saint Clares organization. Also compose and teach Continuing Education courses on patient and medication safety. Develop and utilize data collection tools; and analyze data to guarantee adherence to required regulations. 

Leverage Six Sigma Green Belt practices and GE Change Acceleration to optimize meeting facilitation, process flow mapping, and failure mode effects analysis. 

Train all staff system-wide on patient safety and best practices to ensure continued readiness for unannounced TJC, CMS, and DOH surveys, including disease specific certifications.

Duties also include analyzing and redeveloping / improving existing policies and procedures, and work closely with physicians, the Medical Executive Committee, and the Quality Committee of the Board of Trustees to improve patient safety. 

Active participant in Cerner Workflow Team: regularly reviews, revises and implements changes to computerized charting system.

Worked as key member of team that guided organization to achieve successful triennial Joint Commission survey with minimal Requirements for Improvement, thus avoiding a 55% loss in revenue and significant costs due to potential layoffs, training and rebuilding, an estimated $250,000 in wages, and other factors. Helped to build and train an 18-member safety team developing policy and procedural changes, as well as personally making recommendations directly to senior management. 

Other milestones include working with safety team to reduce falls by more than 5% for all four inpatient campuses. Collaborated successfully with restraint team to achieve 10 out of 12 restraint-free months on behavioral health unit.

As Charge Nurse, regularly assessed patient status throughout 30-bed emergency room divided into three sections: fast-track, main ED, and pediatric ED. Scheduled nursing and technician shifts based on volume trends.   Managed flow of admitted patients and supervised 15 RN’s and five technicians. Educated staff on multiple areas of emergency nursing and documentation, including care of acute MI and CVA patients. Ensured highest levels of customer satisfaction by taking proactive approach to address and resolve problems and concerns. All other typical emergency nursing duties.

Improved nursing assistant and secretary scheduling by leading shift from paper-based to online system; which improved employee self-scheduling, increased employee and physician satisfaction, engendered fewer uncovered shifts, and facilitated coordination of multi-campus coverage.
