I started out as an art student in college wanting nothing more than exposure in my college newspaper. Once we started losing writers, I was pulled in to help carry the load and found that there was more to me than just what I can create with a canvas and paint. I could write, and I had things to say. But more importantly, I began to care about what others had to say; about the ones who had so much to tell and no one and no platform on which to say it. 3 years later, I am still working with and for newspapers for the same reason that I fell in love with the industry in the first place. We have a responsibility to our communities to not only tell the truth and share discoveries that we find; we also have a responsibility to give a voice to those who have none.
I am the chief reporter for the Central Valley's only African American newspaper. I primarily write editorials on issues of community interest, as well as cover local events and profile persons of interest.
Additionally, I have also served as a production assistant, aiding in the creation of the paper itself through inDesign and editing stories.
I fluctuate between each job as needed. I am responsible for writing 1-2 articles a month as a reporter, providing illustrations as needed, and guiding our young writers through their process. I also teach workshops at request, my most requested being "News Writing."
I served the Fresno City College newspaper for 2 years. In that time, I started out as a cartoonist and was made the Art Director by my second week in. The following 2 semesters I continued as Art Director, but also applied for and became the Arts & Entertainment Editor in my third term. During all of this, I am writing for every section except sports, and laying out the A&E section. In my last semester I was Art Director, A&E Editor, and Managing Editor. The Managing Editor runs the paper and manages the editors and content. I also had to manage the business with our advertisers as we currently were under-staffed and no one to do that job. Our current Editor-in-Chief resigned in her second week and I was nominated by my peers and additional department faculty to take over as EIC, as there were 2 others applying for the post. I eliminated the role of Managing Editor but continued the work of it under the EIC title, and gave my long-held position of Art Director and A&E Editor to other competent staffers.
I am currently working towards this degree and am only 2 semesters short of receiving it. I originally was working towards a degree in Art but switched over to Journalism after joining the college newspaper staff. I also was president of the Aspiring Press club, which was voted "Best New Club" on campus in 2013.
Graduated with honor for participation in Academic Decathlon for 2 years and honored at The Night of Knights banquet for Academic Excellence.
