About Katie

Katie Wise has lived in Gastonia, NC for the past  two years.  She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics from Winthrop University in 2005. During her undergraduate career she explored drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, illustration, ceramic arts and various levels of art history.  She was even able to spend a semester abroad at the Jingdezhen Porcelain Institute in the Jiangxi Province of China.  After graduation, Katie worked in several places during the next 5 years, including a portrait studio, coffee shop and child development center.  This experience led her to pursue a degree in art education. She completed the Masters of Art in Teaching program at Winthrop University in May of 2012.  She became involved as a camp teacher with the Civic and Cultural Arts Center of Pineville, which is headed by artist Lee Baumgarten.  Lee encouraged her to push herself as an artist in order to inspire her students.  She spent her first year teaching Beginning Ceramics at Mallard Creek High School and is now serving her fifth  year as the visual arts teacher at Ashbrook High School in Gastonia, NC.  She also volunteers at the Schiele Museum of Natural History.  Katie is looking for a career change that will utilize all of her creative skills.
