• Conceived, planned, and executed a global ABAC risk assessment for a multi-national client, using an international team. Jul 2010 - Feb 2013
Faegre Baker Daniels LLP

From 2001 to 2013, Partner in the Litigation practice of three premier international law firms and the Litigation Practice Group Chair in an“ NLJ Hot List” mid-size Chicago firm. Analyzed complex legal problems; strategized with clients and colleagues on creative, cost-effective approaches; synthesized and simplified disparate facts and theories; planned and organized all case activities; and led litigation teams in pursuit of the clients' goals. Conducted all aspects of discovery, motion practice, trial preparation, and trial in high-stakes litigation matters across industries and substantive areas of law.  Extensively counseled clients on risk management and business-related issues.  Among other accomplishments at Faegre Baker Daniels:

• Simultaneously managed dozens of complex commercial and product liability cases across the country. Called on by client and colleagues as lead trial counsel for cases on the verge of trial. Through targeted discovery and motion practice, successfully settled numerous cases for near-nuisance value.

• By diving deeply into the inner workings of the food service industry, developed facts and theories that led the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan to decline prosecution of the CEO of a $2 billion food products company on securities fraud charges. Using focused discovery and motion practice in a related SEC case, successfully settled all claims for nuisance value and with no admission of liability.

• By delving into the world of art, developed facts and theories in defense of an art gallery owner indicted for fraud in the Northern District of Illinois. This detailed work resulted in a sentence of 6 months, despite the Government’s request for a sentence in excess of 6 years.

Jun 2007 - Jul 2010
Partner/Litigation Practice Group Chair
Levenfeld Pearlstein LLC

Among other accomplishments at Levenfeld Pearlstein:

• Through shrewd document analysis and the development of helpful facts from hostile former client employees, successfully settled – at a fraction of plaintiffs’ demand – a nationwide class action against an automotive OEM manufacturer in state court in rural Oklahoma.

• Using an obscure U.S. statute, turned the tables on foreign plaintiffs seeking discovery against a U.S.-based manufacturing client to secure the plaintiffs’ depositions abroad and, consequently, to vitiate their substantive claims against the client.

• Routinely advised clients on legal issues relating to business strategy across a wide range of industries and fields. Developed a reputation for concise, sage advice on a quick turnaround basis.

• Within one year of joining firm, promoted to Chair of the Litigation practice group, based on leadership and managerial skills. Restructured Group processes and instituted Group partner dinners, Group meetings, and a “Recognition & Reward” program for outstanding Associate and Staff work.

Aug 2004 - Jun 2007
Winston & Strawn LLP

Among other accomplishments at Winston & Strawn:

• Through meticulous study of the law and regulations covering a government contractor and the development of key exonerating facts, convinced the USAO in Chicago to decline prosecution of the CEO of the state’s top workforce services provider on federal False Claims Act charges. In a companion administrative action, completely destroyed the State’s theory of liability through the depositions of the State’s own employees.

• Managed a nationwide team of 16 attorneys defending a Top 3 insurance broker in antitrust investigations that multiple State AG’s had launched against the insurance brokering industry. Defeated the State’s attempt to manufacture a claim of discovery abuse, leading to the settlement of the investigation.

Aug 2001 - Aug 2004
K&L Gates LLP

Among other accomplishments at K&L Gates:

• Managed a cross-office team of 20 attorneys in support of the Bankruptcy Court Examiner’s investigation into the collapse of a major telecommunications company. In the face of multiple, intertwined financial fraud issues, conceived and organized a simplified investigative approach to guide the team. Drafted two sections of a final report that received wide public acclaim.

• By carefully developing facts and preparing for the depositions of plaintiffs’ experts in a complex commercial matter, forced plaintiffs to withdraw two experts and effectively nullified the testimony of three others. Plaintiffs then settled for less than the cost of prosecution.

• Employing novel – though perfectly legal – background investigation techniques, defeated plaintiffs’ claims in a series of wrongful death suits against a professional wrestling organization client, leading to dismissals, a public apology from the organization spearheading the cases, and the payment of legal fees to the client.

• Within one year of joining K&L, appointed to serve as Vice Chair of the Firmwide Hiring Committee, based on leadership in Committee meetings. Developed a novel and efficient law school recruiting process, and created a Summer Associate trial advocacy program.
