Kristopher Smith Miami Miami
Since 2008, longtime Miami resident Kristopher Smith has served as the director of leadership development at Funders' Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities. Kristopher Smith also founded the Florida Underground Railroad Project. The Florida Underground Railroad Project was created to identify Underground Railroad-related sites throughout the state of Florida. The project is a part of the National Park Service Network to Freedom, which was established to coordinate a worldwide network aimed at preserving and researching Underground Railroad sites. In September 2004, the Bill Bags Cape Florida State Park was added to the National Park Services Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. In the 1820s, Cape Florida drew runaway slaves looking to escape their masters and slave catchers. It was here that approximately 300 individuals met with ship captains from the British Bahamas who offered them transportation across the Gulf Stream, until the creation of the Cape Florida Lighthouse that blocked the escape route.
