Being a member of this organization has allowed me in to interact with professionals, organize campus events,participate in community health initiatives, and attend professional meetings, such as Ohio Dietetic Association (ODA) annual meeting and the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE).

Under the supervision of the Holmes County Health Educator, myself and Autumn Sweet created an informational booth on healthy snacking that we ran at two community health fairs in Holmes County. Our booth included two components, healthy snacking for toddlers and what to put in the bottle for infants.

Ashland County Associated Charities: Food Bank

Spring Semester 2012

Helped to fill grocery orders, restock shelves, accept donations, and distribute food to individuals within Ashland County.


Dietary Behaviors and Perceived Stress of Office EmployeesFall Semester 2012

As an undergraduate student I have conducted my first research project, that looked at dietary behaviors and perceived stress of office employees.Perceived stress was measured using Sheldon Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale and dietary behaviors were assessed using a questionnaire that I developed. Participants were recruited from local businesses in Ashland, Ohio (n=42).

Steps to Completing Research Project:

- Approval of Human Subjects Review Board (HSRB) for research project- Development of research tool

- Gathered data from participants

- Utilized IBM SPSS Statistics 19 to analyze data

- Wrote abstract for submission to Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: FNCE

Community Projects

United Way: Crunch Out Obesity in Ashland County

Summer 2011 to Present

Background Information:

Based on a needs assessment in the county, United Way of Ashland County funded a community initiative, "Crunch Out Obesity". The program provided all students in grades four, five, and six throughout five county schools (Ashland City, Hillsdale Local, Mapleton Local, St. Edwards Catholic, and Loudonville-Perrysville Exempted Village Schools) a "Crunch Out" kit. This kit contained an exercise ball, instructional exercise booklet, nutrition information (portion sizes,introduction to MyPlate,vegetables and fruit,  and eating cues), magnet on visuals to help with portion sizes, as well as an exercise and food journal challenge.

My Role:

I served as the Project leader for the duration of the "Crunch Out" initiative. I began by helping the director of United Way, Ev DeVaul, determine an appropriate budget for the program, create necessary contacts, and conduct meetings for all of the individuals involved. I also was responsible for the development of nutritional information that was used in the kit.

Wayne County Ohio State Extension: Summer Food Service Program

June 2010-August 2010

Background Information:

Wayne County was selected to participate as a pilot county for a study funded by the state. The study focused on children's attendance to various nutrition education segments during the summer with the inclusion of an incentive. A total of seven classes were taught including topics such as, Eat a Variety of Foods Daily, Choose Healthful Snacks, Eat Low Fat Dairy Foods, Use Nutrition Facts to Make Healthy Food Choices, Increase Physical Activity, Wash Hands with Soap and Water, and Packing a Safe Lunch.

My Role:

I served as a student aid for the duration of the summer program under the guidance of Darcy Becker, Family Nutrition Program Assistant. I helped with preparation of lessons, as well as implementation. I spent seven weeks alternating between three summer camp locations assisting Darcy Becker with the program.
