Kurnia Asia is a multinational insurance group operating in South East Asia. The group owns the largest general insurer in Malaysia.I was promoted to the current position after successfully transformed Kurnia Malaysia of which I was the CEO since 2004. My main roles are to oversee the international operations of the Kurnia Group, namely the operations in Thailand and Indonesia, besides Malaysia, to ensure that the various operating subsidiaries of the Group achieve their respective strategic goals. In addition, strategic expansion in the region through merger and acquisition is also part of my responsibilities. Current focus is on reengineering the business operation of Kurnia Thailand and revamping the management team.

Held the post of CEO of Kurnia Insurans (Malaysia) Berhad, the largest general insurer in Malaysia since 1997, with a gross written premium of more than RM1 billion (US$300 million), 30 branch offices, 1900 employees and 7000 agents. In order to consolidate the company’s market leadership position, I initiated a major transformation in the company’s business focus since 2005 to reduce costs and become more resilient in the face of market liberalization and intense competition.


·Successfully established the company as one of Malaysia’s Most Valuable Brands in 2007 (by Interbrand / 4As Malaysia)

·Successfully implemented a transformation program to rebalance the company’s business portfolio and reduce its reliance on motor insurance by achieving a 35% growth in its non-motor business in FYE2008.

·Successfully undertaken an aggressive cost reduction program to reduce receivables and claim costs, reduce claim cycle time and improve customer service, resulting in total cost savings of RM60 million equivalent to 6% of gross premium per year with negligible adverse impact to top line performance.

·Also successfully increased the contribution from the more profitable non-motor product lines, with a premium growth of 35% in 2008.

Served on the Board of Insurance Services Malaysia Berhad (ISM), a not-for-profit organization co-owned by all insurance companies in Malaysia and supported by Bank Negara Malaysia to provide a wide range of insurance and actuarial services to the industry.Also served on the Management Committee of General Insurance Association Malaysia (PIAM), 2008.

Held various operations responsibilities including marketing, underwriting and claims. Helped the company become the first general insurer in Malaysia to achieve RM 1 billion gross premium, achieved despite the 1997/98 Asian financial crisis when businesses must operate under the most challenging environment. Appointed to the Board of Kurnia as well as made the Chief Executive Officer in 2004. A few months later in January 2005, the company was listed on Bursa Malaysia (The Malaysian stock exchange) via an IPO.

Held the position of Head of Property & Casualty division for Perdana Cigna Insurance Malaysia, part of the then Cigna International Group (now known as ACE Insurance). The division contributed about one half of the total revenue and profit to the company. During that time, Cigna Malaysia was one of the best performing companies among Cigna’s operating units in South East Asia. During that time too, I acquired the invaluable experience of working in a multinational organization.

Held various responsibilities including as Technical Manager overseeing the company’s overall underwriting and risk management functions, and as a specialist Fire Underwriter responsible for the then largest and most profitable fire insurance book in Malaysia. Also as one of the first Malaysians to be trained in risk surveys and loss prevention engineering under a Malaysian-Australian joint venture.
