This year the first example of my initiative in journalism was creating the fashion column. The second was at the journalism conference in Minnesota when Anaika's sexual harassment piece needed artwork and I created the above collage. It had a short deadline that required focus and creativity. The artwork was received well by staff and readers.
Initiative also covers my character trait requirement. I created and organized the conception of the fashion column. I then presented my ideas to the editor and sold the concept to her and the team. On a nonexistent advertising budget and very little investment, I still managed to receive the highest amount of views (2458) on my 1920's article. While we don't know how the article gained traction, it continues to grow in views. I have now set the precedent for future fashion columnists at the Foothill Dragon Press.
My name is Kirsten Wiltjer. I am a recent graduate from Foothill Technology High School and plan on continuing my education at the University of California, Santa Barbara with an Undeclared major. I am very determined, observant and hard working. My interests include fashion journalism and international studies.
During my senior year of high school I was on the staff of our school newspaper, the Foothill Dragon Press. I created and maintained the fashion column, writing about various styles and fashion for certain events. I did collages for most of my fashion articles as well as other articles on the website. My other articles for the paper included play reviews.
For the past year I have tutored at Project Understanding. Once a week on Wednesdays, I spend an hour at the Saticoy Library tutoring students from Citrus Glen Elementary School. I am paired up with two brothers, Joshua and Cesar. I help them complete their homework packets which they are assigned each week. These contain various assignments of math, writing and reading. Upon completion of each worksheet, I reward them with a sticker of their choice. I hope that I have influenced them positively to help them make intelligent choices in life. Tutoring Joshua and Cesar has built a relationship that I will always value.
I swam for Buena High School's Varsity Swim Team for all four years. My best event was the 100 Backstroke.
