Affiliated with the University of Kansas, Kent McCarthy began his relationship with the school during his own education. McCarthy acquired a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Accounting from the university, as well as a Master’s degree in Taxation. He completed his MBA at Stanford University and also earned accreditation as a Certified Public Accountant. Following his graduate studies, Kent McCarthy joined Goldman Sachs in New York City and San Francisco. Over the next decade, he performed for its Private Client Services Division, became its top producer, and sat on the Stone Street Investment Committee. Several years after starting with Goldman Sachs, McCarthy took a year's sabbatical and returned to the University of Kansas School of Business to create a course in Applied Portfolio Management with a $250,000 donation. Eventually, Kent McCarthy left the financial institution to teach the class full time. A popular course, it garnered him the Henry A. Bubb Award for Outstanding Teacher, and he co-wrote the book Applied Portfolio Management: How University of Kansas Students Generate Alpha to Beat the Street. Additionally, McCarthy began educating students in the MBA program at the school's Italy campus. Although Kent McCarthy retired from teaching, he continues to supervise and guest lecture the class. Still involved with the KU School of Business, he sits on its Board of Advisors, the Edwards Campus Advisory Board, and the Student Relays Committee and holds a lifetime membership in the Chancellor's Club. His significant contributions are also on display at the McCarthy Family Clubhouse at Hoglund Ballpark, the Fieldhouse Apartments in honor of his mother, Marie S. McCarthy, and at the McCarthy APM Finance Lab in the new School of Business building. While on faculty at the school, Kent McCarthy created three equity hedge funds: Jayhawk Investments, LP; Jayhawk Institutional Partners, LP; and the Jayhawk China Fund (Cayman), Ltd. Moreover, he advised the portfolio manager at Primarius Focus, LP. Today, McCarthy functions as Founder, President, and Chief Investment Officer at Jayhawk Capital Management, LLC, an alternative investment company dedicated to funding companies in China.
