My remit was to visit, scope, estimate and manage all works connected with insurance related requests for the South of Scotland on behalf of Royal Sun Alliance. These can range in value from £500 - £100,000 ( $1500 - $250,000 ) and normally there are 5 – 10 jobs running at any one time under my control. In managing the works the organisation of labour, plant, materials and subcontractors were my responsibility. Works carried out under this remit include, drainage, underpinning, concrete slabs, brick/blockwork, internal finishes and decoration, roofworks and external finishes. All costing for the works from weekly to management valuations, sub contractor payments and invoicing are required to be undertaken by myself. These works deal with the public ( the insured ) and engineers / claims advisors who work on behalf of Royal Sun Alliance reporting and recording all phases in the work. Expected turnover for the year is £1-2 million ( $2.5 – 5 Million).
Oct 1997 – Oct 2001 Luddon Construction
Planning and Liaison Manager
During this time I was working within the BP site at Grangemouth in both a planning and liaison capacity for all civils works under both maintenance and project contracts. Planning was undertaken using both Primavera and CSP Projects planning programmes. This involved interfaces with BP, Luddon and other term contractors working in the BP facility. Liaison was an integral part of the job in which non-construction minded people would request technical and constructability advice when undertaking the construction works. The maintenance works were valued at £2-3 million ( $5-7.5 Million ) per year and the projects works valued at up to £1.5 million ( $3.5 Million). Tasks involved in the liaison part include scoping and estimating the works, planning and the attendance to weekly meetings to report on the progress of the works.
During this time I was also given the task of Shutdown Manager for the civils works. A task which involved extremely tight timescales and budgets in order to restart plants as quickly as possible.
June 1996 – Oct 1997 Luddon Construction
Responsible for setting out works, cost control, directing labour and sub contractor, processing of all site documentation and financial reporting. Projects undertaken were both new build and refurbishment type works and covered drainage, substructure, foundations, roadworks, steelwork, cladding and concrete floor slabs. I was employed on various sites throughout this time and eventually ended up at BP Grangemouth.
