A distinguished figure in Indian politics, Kamal Nath serves as the Union Minister of Urban Development, a position he has held since early 2011. In this capacity, he oversees all aspects of the Ministry of Urban Development as it administrates rules and regulations regarding housing and urban development issues. Kamal Nath also works closely with a number of attached offices, including the Directorate of Printing, the Directorate of Estates, the Land and Development Office, and the Central Public Works Department.Since winning his first election to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, in 1980, Kamal Nath has expressed unwavering support for economic development in India. He attended the 2011 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he stressed the importance of improved market access for developing countries, namely in the area of agriculture. Nath argued that India’s low applied export tariffs in developed countries came about as a result of agreements such as the Export Promotion Capital Goods scheme, which does not apply tariffs. A longtime member of the Indian National Congress, Kamal Nath now represents the Chhindwara constituency in the state of Madhya Pradesh in the 15th Lok Sabha. Nath has presided over a number of different ministries throughout his career as a politician, including the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Ministry of Textiles, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Before beginning his political career, he earned a Bachelor of Commerce from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata.
