Firefighter / EMT

Charleston Fire Department

I currently work with the Charleston Fire Department. I started with the department Feb 22, 2010,  beginning with a 20 week recruit class that went 5 days a week 10 hours a day.  Since then I have graduated and was placed on a engine company working a 24 on 48 off schedule responding to fire and EMS calls along with building inspections and preplanning of target occupancy's along with public educations programs.

Jan 2007 - Feb 2010

Heavy Equipment Operator

I worked with Commercial Contracting Corporation as a journeyman operating enfineer and perform basic to advanced level skills. I operate equipment such as excavators, bull dozers (finish grade), rubber tire backhoes, front end loaders, mini and large excavators, small cranes, fork lifts, rough terrain fork lifts, as well as some basic labor details. I have been working with CCC for a little over two years now. Due to the downturn of construction in Michigan, CCC has had to lay-off many operating engineers but has kept me on because of my skill level and excellent work ethics.

Jan 2008 - Feb 2010

Fire / Rescue

Farmington Hills Fire Department

During my employment as a paid-on-call firefighter, I received some of the best training possible through the Farmington Hills Fire and EMS Academy.  I received a MFR (medical first responder) license, American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer,  Firefighter I and II, HAZMAT Awareness / Operations, Apparatus Pumping Operations Certificate and a EMT-B license (Emergency Medical Technician Basic)

During the two years I worked for the department i was able to respond to medical calls with a emt-b license. With the completion of Fire I and II, I was then able to respond to fire calls. As a probationary firefighter we had to go through a series of reviews to continue responding and to stay employed with the fire department. I successfully completed my probationary period which consisted of maintaining a 45% run average, learning address schemes of the city, department SOP's, learning how to operate and drive the fire and medical apparatuses and learned the different routes we took to the hospitals we transported to.

Mar 2006 - Jan 2007

Heavy Equipment Operator

During my employment with Aristeo Construction, I worked as a journeyman operator and performed basic to advanced level skills.  I operated equipment such as excavators, bull dozers (finish grade), rubber tire backhoes, front end loaders, mini and large excavators, small cranes, fork lifts, rough terrain fork lifts.

My reason for separation with Aristeo Construction was due to lack of work. I left on very good terms.

**Definition of Heavy Equipment Operator - Journeyman operator: a qualified, skilled tradesman who has completed a special apprenticeship program and or mastered a specific skill or craft.   A heavy equipment operator drives and operates engineering vehicles used in engineering and construction projects.

Aug 2004 - Mar 2006

Labor

During my employment with Angelo Iafrate I worked as a skilled labor in the International Union Labors Local 959.  Most of the work I performed with this company was underground pipe work, road construction and grade work which all demanded hard manual labor and long hours.

My reason for separation from Angelo Iafrate was to further my career in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324. I left on very good terms.

** Definition of Skilled labor - Skilled labor generally refers to workers who have had long periods of formal training. Jobs requiring skilled labor may involve exercising independant judgment, hard work and a high degree of manual skill. Skilled labor may be workers who have special knowledge or qualifications. The precise definition of skilled labor depends on industry and regional standards

Summary

I finally achieved my goal to become a career firefighter, and in the process I had to leave my family in michigan. I plan on doing every thing I can do to broaden my education in the fire service. I have strong interests in advancing my EMT license to a Paramedic license, and taking Fire Science classes to obtain a degree to further my career as a professional firefighter. Now with some experience under my belt, my goal to get back to Michigan, my home.

Objective

Hello, my name is Justin Perkey.  I am a 25 years old.  Here is a little history about myself.  I have one sister who is 20 and two parents in there early 50's. Although my parents are separated, my sister and I remain close to both parents. I grew up in Farmington Hills and graduated from Farmington Hills Harrison High School where I played football for four years. At the time of graduation, college did not seem like the right choice so I acquired a skilled labor position with the Labors Union. After getting into the construction industry everything seemed fine. The money was good, and work was plentiful. At 19 I was promoted to an operating engineer, and was then able to start looking for a house. About one year after that, I closed on my first house at the age of 20.

Since then I have sold my house and moved down to South Carolina to pursue my career as a professional firefighter with the Charleston fire department. My whole life my parents taught me the importance of working hard for what you want, and so far I have been able to achieve all of my goals I have ever set in my life. I understand the importance working hard, having discipline, and having good work ethic and pride in everything I do

Interest

My interests include snowmobiling, riding ATVs, hunting and fishing, spending time with family and friends, working around the house and staying busy.
