Judge Jim Lamz
- Slidell US-LA
Jim Lamz, a judge for the City Court of Slidell, Louisiana, does more than make decisions at the bench. Judge Jim Lamz also takes it upon himself to offers solutions for community problems. James Lamz’s efforts to educate and advocate for youths has won him statewide attention. Judge Lamz assumed responsibility for his parish’s GED program when the state legislature cut its funding through the school board. Lamz organized the community and found a location in a church near the court building. A church member with GED teaching experience agreed to teach the class. Later in the year, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System heard about Lamz's program and convinced Judge Lamz to let it take over the GED class, retaining the church as a teaching site. At last count, 46 students had enrolled, and 21 students were on a waiting list.
