The theme of this off-campus experience was homelessness, particularly its effect and impact on teenagers. This was a service trip and team members worked both directly and indirectly with homeless and at-risk youth in San Diego, California. My direct interaction was during evening hours at the Stand Up For Kids (SUFK) center where local homeless and at-risk youth gather to eat, get free clothing, shower, and socialize; I also accompanied SUFK volunteers who do outreach to transient teenagers during the evening, and I worked with other local non-profit organizations that work with the homeless population in San Diego (e.g., soup kitchens, food distribution sites, homeless shelters, etc.). My indirect work was involved in cleaning, organizing, and doing routine maintenance at the SUFK center.

Patience and the will to always help others out no matter what the situation may be. Never neglect someone from the opportunity to speak out and listen inventively towards what they may say. Being as honest as I may be to encourage others to be their best and become a motivator for those who seek support. Finding that inner being that is willing to take the challenge of wanting more for their community and giving back to them.
