Pro Bono Volunteering

No McDonald's Kenton Residents' Action Group
  • I volunteered pro bono for a local residents' group campaigning against the proposed building of a McDonald's outlet in Kenton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The case received significant media and political attention due to the implications the new outlet would have on traffic congestion and the health of pupils at the nearby school.
  • Completed extensive research work on various aspects of planning law in assisting the case, as well as preparing bundles for expert witnesses. Assisted the barrister during the Inquiry.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to engage with real clients and witness the practical application of law. Ultimately, McDonald's withdrew their appeal, and it was extremely rewarding to see community action prevail.

Activities & Societies

University College Boat Club
I have been a dedicated member of the boat club for four years, training as much as five times a week as part of the Men's 1st VIII and winning in categories at Durham, Hexham and Durham City regattas. I have improved my team-working skills considerably in a physically demanding sport. Furthermore, being a member of UCBC is a huge time-commitment, and so has furthered my ability to manage my time effectively.

University College Big Band

As a Tenor Saxophonist in my college big band, I have performed at a variety of events around Durham. Reaching Grade 8 standard at Tenor Saxophone took many years of practice and perseverance. It gave me experience of performing both individually and as part of a band to large audiences.

Streetlaw in Schools Project Volunteer

Whilst studying the GDL I volunteered for the Streetlaw in Schools outreach project within the Student Law Office. As part of a group I was responsible for researching, designing and delivering a lesson on a topical area of the law to local secondary school students. We taught a one hour lesson on the Human Rights Act to demonstrate the importance of the law in the pupils' everyday lives. This was an extremely rewarding experience in advancing my presentation, team-working and research skills.

Durham University Union (Debating) Society

As a member of Intermediate Debating Practice (IDP) in my first year, I furthered my public speaking and negotiating skills immeasurably. As a life member, I continue to attend interesting addresses by speakers such as John Bercow MP.
