In my first semester of college, I was hired as a staff sports writer for the student run campus newspaper, The Murray State News. I wrote 2-3 stories per week, covering intramurals, track & field and cross country.
After spending three summers working as a lifeguard, I was hired as the lifeguard manager. I was solely responsible for managing a staff of nine lifeguards, and ensuring the pool was maintained, clean and safe for use. The responsibilities included scheduling lifeguards, ensuring guards were trained in the proper life-saving techniques and safe pool maintenance and handling any patron concerns or issues. I also worked directly with my supervisor in handling financial and membership issues surrounding the pool.
After working for one year as a writer, I was hired as the Sports Editor. I was solely responsible for the sports section and the staff of eight sports writers. My responsibilities included coming up with assignments, editing stories, designing the pages of the section, managing the sports portion of the newspaper's website, handling travel arrangements for writers to attend games at other campuses and attending weekly editorial board meetings. Additionally, I took on the jobs of covering the men's basketball team and writing a bi-weekly column.
I worked as a lifeguard for three summers at the community pool in my hometown. During that time, I assisted in pool and facility maintenance, ensured patron safety, and worked with a team of eight other lifeguards.
