Jonathan Church

Industrial Engineer at Biecon Industrial Engineering (Pty) Ltd

Introduction

Hi,

This preamble is included to provide some insight into my character, professional values and the nature of my work experience. To date my employment as an engineer has been 4½ years at one company, BIECON Industrial Engineering (Pty) Ltd - a small consulting company which performs logistics studies for clients in the mining industry.

My projects have been short term contracts with the majority of the big South African mining houses and consultancy firms. A portfolio of the major works which I have personally performed is included on this page and provides a picture of the variety of work and clients that I have been privileged enough to be involved with. BIECON was formed by the privatization of the Industrial Engineering department of AngloGold Ashanti, which allowed me to cut my teeth under the mentorship and direction of vastly experienced Industrial Engineers.

The experience which I value most of my employment history to date is my exposure to personnel in all areas and levels of responsibility. I have worked closely with night cleaning crews, shift bosses and mine overseers; and with personnel all the way up the chain of command to senior management of the mines and mining companies. Being able to say that I have spent my months in the stopes and workshops as well as in the board rooms is a point of pride for me. I count my exposure to diversity in the business cultures of different departments invaluable. Working with union representatives and as a member of different project teams from Worley Parsons, DRA, RSV and Hatch has also provided great insight.

The ability to efficiently assess systems and project requirements has been a necessity of my work. I typically start a new project with little or no information and must quickly identify what information is needed to accomplish my mandate as well as how to acquire it. The variety of operations which have constituted my work creates its own challenge in that I often require new technical expertise to achieve objectives.

In addition to performance of the logistics studies, my responsibilities include formal and informal presentation of my work to relevant stakeholders; and the documentation of my work in formal reports.

My experiences with BIECON have been enlightening, allowing me to explore the country as well as the field of engineering. My experience has also been rich, with exposure to many colourful events such as the identification of catastrophic project failures; and vervet monkeys stealing my Ouma rusks from BIECON’s office kitchen.

I hope this text has served its purpose.

Kind Regards,

Jonathan Church

Project Portfolio

Bakubung chairlifts - 2013

Operation: Bakubung Platinum Mine (Wesizwe with Worley Parsons)

Location: Pilanesburg, North West Province

Personnel movement simulation study to determine face times in a planned future infrastructure during critical periods of the LoM. Shaft zoning, walk routes and multiple chairlifts modelled to determine worker travel times to individual raise lines on all levels.

Tumela surface - 2013

Operation: Tumela 5 Shaft (Anglo American Platinum with Hatch)

Location: Thabazimbi, Limpopo Province

Simulation study of proposed future personnel handling infrastructure on surface to evaluate designs and requirements. Transport/parking, security (access turnstiles), change house, lamp room and bank facilities tested.

Modikwa mining - 2014

Operation: Modikwa Platinum Mine (ARM Mining Consortium and Rustenburg Platinum Mines)

Location: Burgersfort, Limpopo Province

Underground work study of various operations as a part of a greater total logistics study. Studies included: portal/decline traffic, stope cleaning, day shift stoping (mining & support) and all TM3 operations (haulage development).

Hossy declines - 2014

Operation: Lonmin Hossy Platinum Shaft (Lonmin with Worley Parsons)

Location: Rustenburg, North West Province

Simulation study of personnel, material and explosives transport logistics from a transfer level to lower levels using chairlifts and a material decline winch.

Beisa evacuation - 2014

Operation: Beatrix 4 Shaft (Sibanye)

Location: Theunissen, Free State Province

Simulation study of evacuation strategies under various conditions over the LoM. Investigation into refurbishing a disused shaft as part of an alternate evacuation strategy. Results discussed in terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act (Act No. 29 of 2006), industry best practices and Sibanye internal guidelines.

Palabora Copper gate - 2015

Operation: Palabora Copper (Palabora Mining Company)

Location: Phalaborwa, Limpopo Province

Simulation study of security infrastructure and procedures relating to surface access to the mining grounds. Due to the presence of wild game on site, vehicle access is mandatory (pedestrians disallowed) – resulting in gate queuing times at shift start and end. Upon entry breathalyzer testing and identity confirmation affects queues; upon exit vehicle searches affect queues.

Hlanganani tramming - 2015

Operation: Hlanganani Gold Mine (Sibanye)

Location: Driefontein, Gauteng Province

Simulation study of future tramming logistics on a primary mining & transfer level which would service lower levels via declines and existing upper levels via transfer passes. Personnel (man carriages), material and rock handling logistical capacities evaluated during critical periods of the LoM.

Lonmin busses - 2015

Operation: Lonmin Complex (Lonmin)

Location: Rustenburg, North West Province

Logistics study of surface bus operations servicing the total Lonmin workforce. Management of a study team to measure trip times and personnel numbers on all routes and at all stops within the mining grounds and neighbouring residential areas. Analysis of study data.

Mponeng phase III - 2015

Operation: Mponeng Gold Mine (AngloGold Ashanti with DRA)

Location: Western Deep Levels, Gauteng Province

Simulation study of the Phase III decline project during capital development. Capacity of mining, cleaning, material transport and rock hauling operations evaluated during critical periods of the multi-barrel ultra-deep project.

Bakubung kibble - 2016

Operation: Bakubung Platinum Mine (Wesizwe with Aveng)

Location: Pilanesburg, North West Province

Simulation study of Vent Shaft kibble hoist logistics during the handover phase from vertical to flat capital development. The study included Bumble Bee and Kibble hoisting of men, material, water and rock from shaft bottom and servicing the flat development logistics of upper levels. Optimisation strategies for loading with the grab on shaft bottom were investigated. The feasibility of developing an additional upper level simultaneously with the existing mining plan was evaluated. A shaft schedule was designed which would service the results of the simulation study.

Bokoni concept - 2016

Operation: Bokoni Platinum Mine (Anglo American)

Location: Polokwane, Limpopo Province

Simulation study of future tramming logistics required to access a new mining area underground on multiple levels with mid-level passes and transfers. The study advised on the feasibility of the concept in terms of personnel, material and rock transport.

VR benchmarking - 2016

Operation: Vaal River Complex (AngloGold Ashanti)

Location: Orkney, Free State Province

Work study initiative to benchmark and evaluate in-stope operations at Moab Khotsong and Kopanang gold mines. Management of a team of work study officers. Detailed data analysis of in-stope procedures/operations as well as personnel transport/travel and at both mines.

VR travel - 2017

Operation: Vaal River Complex (AngloGold Ashanti)

Location: Orkney, Free State Province

Simulation study of current personnel travel to all active workplaces at Moab Khotsong and Kopanang gold mines to determine available face time per workplace. Various zoning and man carriage strategies, chairlift modifications and new infrastructures were tested to determine expected face time benefits.
