John M Connolly Bain Capital, Boston Massachusetts, managing director, operating partner

Summary

Accomplished financial executive John M. Connolly earned a Bachelor of Arts from St. Norbert College and later traveled to France to complete the Executive Education Program at the prestigious INSEAD business school. Early in his career, Mr. Connolly founded Mainspring, Inc., a consulting firm that provided numerous Fortune 1000 companies with strategic advisory and research services. Owing in part to John M. Connolly’s managerial expertise, the firm expanded from a small start-up operation to a publicly traded company that was purchased by IBM in 2001. After his successes with Mainspring, John M. Connolly took a position as President and Chief Executive Officer with Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS). Among the services he provided was governance analytics, a creative program that simplified the management of fiduciary responsibilities for institutional investors. As President, Mr. Connolly oversaw an expert staff that provided these and numerous other proxy advisory services to corporations and financial institutions. An undeniable asset to ISS, John M. Connolly led the company to a 250 percent profit increase that represented a doubling of revenue in a period of only three years. In 2006, The RiskMetrics Group later purchased ISS, and Mr. Connolly accepted a position at M|C Communications as Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer. Today, Mr. Connolly presides as Managing Director and Operating Partner for Bain Capital Ventures (BCV), a private investment firm that manages a portfolio of over $60 billion. As of March 8, 2011, he also serves as interim Chief Executive Officer of The Princeton Review, a company that provides test preparation services for students enrolled in institutions ranging from high schools to business, law, and medical schools.
