An innovative developer and contract manufacturer of Medical Devices, designs and manufactures world class medical devices for large OEM's such as Smith & Nephew, Stryker, Arthrocare and Medtronic. Led engineering team developing medical devices for projected 24% growth year over year.

Assistant Plant Manager, Quemetco Division of RSR, 2006 to 2009. Held operational responsibility for $170M facility recycling lead acid batteries for auto industry. Managed $60M budget, five direct reports and 100+ personnel. Managed battery wrecking, furnace/refining operations, shipping/receiving, and water/air quality.

Plant Manager

Plant/General Manager, 2004 to 2006. Directed daily plant operations including manufacturing, P&L, manufacturing engineering, and quality organization. Managed $100M budget and total of 600 personnel. Oversaw 100-person polishing operation in Tijuana, Mexico.

Led lot development, CNC programming, tool design and tool fabrication departments. Resolved manufacturing roadblocks in Chihuahua, Mexico facility. Promoted from Process Engineering Manager, 1994 to 1996.

Product Engineer, Easton Aluminum, 1989 to 1994. Managed product lifecycle for aluminum ice/field hockey and golf lines for global producer of aluminum and composite sports equipment. Led projects, including product design and manufacturing. Responsible for technical part of sales literature and technical support at trade shows.

Project/Manufacturing Engineer, Superior Industries, 1986 to 1989. Held full responsibility for projects from conceptual drawings through design and OEM customer qualification to initial production. Led development of foundry processes, mold refinements, and meeting quality standards. Trained new engineers.

I earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University, graduated from the Lean Learning Center and trained in Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), ISO TS-16949/14001/13485, OHSAS-18001 and Behavior-Based Safety. Fluent in Spanish.



Change Management

Justified Foundry Expansion, Avoiding Shutdown. Industry downturn led CEO to cancel foundry expansion including equipment upgrades. Conducted cost/benefit analysis, demonstrating need to shut plant if equipment wasn’t upgraded. Received approval, installed new equipment and maintained plant operation for four additional years.

Product Development

Supported 10-fold growth of ice hockey line over 5 years by designing composite and aluminum hockey sticks. Grew the line from 6 to 15 part numbers, promoted the line and trained the sales staff on the product technical features. Developed product, processes, and quality requirements for a new multi-million dollar Japanese OEM account to manufacture aluminum wheels for automotive applications.   Developed engineering methodology and processes to support projected company growth of 24% year on year for this medical device manufacturer.   Responsible for projects from conceptualization, through design, customer qualification and initial production, working with General Motors, Ford, and Mazda engineers.  

Driving cultural change

Envisioned, promoted, and designed an $8 million automated paint-line to replace a manual and outdated line. The new line resulted in 50% reduction in labor cost and a 33% increase in throughput. Design became standard for two subsequent facilities built in Mexico.   Developed and implemented an automated inspection and production reporting system resulting in a 33% labor reduction, improved data quality, reduced product variation and machine downtime and 35 % less scrap.

SAP & IFS ERP systems

Lean Implementation

Drove cultural change in lead smelter using Lean rules, tools and principles to effectively turn plant around resulting in 5% productivity increase in first year and record setting pace in the second year.   Championed Lean Manufacturing initiative in conjunction with Ford Motor Company. Decreased setup times by 50% using lean techniques through improved inspection, better organization of setup processes, and standardized tooling.   Implemented a company wide tool use reduction program that resulted in a 45% reduction in cutting tool costs.

Conversational Spanish

Have spoken fluent Spanish for over 20 years. Effectively used during many business trips to Mexico to work with Mexican plants.
